NATO says missile system running

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said during the NATO summit in Chicago on Sunday that the system has entered “interim capability.”

During the summit, NATO leaders agreed to launch the first stage of the four-phase project.

Russia, however, has expressed opposition to the project and considers the missile system as a threat to its own security.

Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the NATO summit in Chicago.

Moscow demands joint control over the system and has called on NATO to sign a legally-binding guarantee that the system is not aimed at Russia. NATO has refused to.

Washington and the Western military coalition say, however, that the system does not target or threaten Russia in any way.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Sunday, “This is not a project targeted against Russia, but a project we want to push forward with Russia in the interest of Europe’s security.”

The NATO system is scheduled to become fully operational by 2018.

Spain, Poland and Romania will also be cooperating with the NATO project.

Spain will host four US Aegis ships at its port in Rota. Poland and Romania will also host US land-based SM-3 missiles in the coming years.
