Donald Trump revealed to NBC News that he asked former FBI Director James Comey if he were under investigation by his agency.

Trump told Lester Holt, host of NBC Nightly News, that he “actually asked” Comey “once over dinner and twice by phone” if he was personally under FBI investigation.

He told Holt: “I said, if it’s possible would you let me know, ‘Am I under investigation?’ He said, ‘You are not under investigation.’ I know I’m not under investigation.”

This is not the first time Trump has actively tried to obstruct investigations into himself and his campaign with regard to Russia and last year’s election.

Andrew McCabe, acting director of the FBI since Comey’s firing, was part of a cover up involving White House Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus who spoke to McCabe about the FBI’s investigation into Trump associates and Russia.

Priebus told the press after the fact that McCabe explained to him that a New York Times story citing “four current and former American officials,” who relayed that “[p]hone records and intercepted calls show that members of Donald J. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials” was “BS” and shouldn’t be believed.

The Trump administration recruited Senator and Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee Richard Burr and Congressman and Chair of the House Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes to contact the news media and “counter news stories about Trump associates’ ties to Russia.”

According to Journalist Greg Miller, “the calls were orchestrated by the White House after unsuccessful attempts by the administration to get senior FBI officials to speak with news organizations and dispute the accuracy of stories on the alleged contacts with Russia.”

Nunes was later part of a botched attempt to distract the American public from Trump’s ties to Russia that involved “Ezra Cohen-Watnick and Michael Ellis, two National Security Council officials in the Trump White House” who gave the congressman documents that was later used to insinuate that President Obama had “tapped” the wires at Trump Tower during the campaign.

When asked about possibly meddling in the FBI’s investigation into himself and Russia, Trump said “he never tried to pressure Comey into dropping the FBI probe of the Trump campaign and insisted, ‘I want to find out if there was a problem in the election having to do with Russia.’”

Trump maintains that there was no “collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians. Also, the Russians did not affect the vote.”
