Netanyahu blocked bill that would prevent division of Jerusalem, suggests alternative version

nsnbc : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Sunday, blocked for proposed legislation that would prevent the division of Jerusalem. The Israeli legislation would, regardless whether it would be adopted or not, have no standing with regard to the international status of Jerusalem.

Lions Gate_East Jerusalem_PalestineThe Office of the Prime Minister explained the Netanyahu rejected the proposal because he wants the coalition government to reach a consensus on what the bill would look like rather than use a version put forward by Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett of the right-wing Bayit Yehudi party. The Office of the Prime Minister added: “In addition, there is a Jerusalem Affairs Minister, Ze’ev Elkin, who has the right to be involved in the legislation”.

The proposed bill which was scheduled to be put up for vote next Sunday requires a concurrent vote of 80 members of the Israeli parliament (Knesset) to approve the concession of any part of Jerusalem, including any part of the Israeli occupied East Jerusalem.

Head of Bayit Yehudi party Naftali Bennett reportedly said that the bill sets a very high bar for dividing Jerusalem. “Twice in the last 15 years, we were a hair’s-breadth away from giving away the Temple Mount, Mount of Olives, City of David and three-quarters of the old city to the Palestinians, in the time of [former prime ministers Ehud] Barak and [Ehud] Olmert,” he said. “Netanyahu blocked the legislative process, but we are determined to pass it in three readings, and I’m sure we can unite around the bill and Jerusalem,” he added.

Israel occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, during the 1967 Middle East War. In circumvention of international law and a cohort of UN resolutions, Israel annexed the city in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the Jewish state. Likewise, Israel has declared that “Israel and the Golan are part and parcel, and that the international community should get used to it”.

Israel also annexed the Syrian Golan Heights during the 1967 war. Discoveries of major hydrocarbon resources further strengthened Israel’s determination to defy international law and to permanently annex the area.

International law views the Israeli-occupied Arab Territories, which include the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights as well as the Lebanese Sheba Farms area as “occupied territories” and considers all Jewish settlement-building activity on the land as illegal.

Palestinians accuse Israel of waging an aggressive campaign to “Judaize” the historic city with the aim of effacing its Arab and Islamic identity and driving out its Palestinian inhabitants. Likewise, Syrians in the Golan protest against Israel’s enforcement of the New Hebrew language as official language, Israeli administration, as well as Israeli school curricula for Syrian school children – not to mention home demolitions and settlement construction similar to that in the West Bank.
