‘Nigeria kidnapped girls turning point’

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan says the recent abduction of over 200 schoolgirls by Boko Haram could be a turning point in the government’s fight against the group.

Jonathan told delegates at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Nigeria’s capital Abuja on Thursday that the recent kidnapping of these girls “will be the beginning of the end of “such acts in the country.

The Nigerian president also welcomed an offer from the international community including the United States, Britain, France and China, to help locate and rescue the girls abducted from a school in Borno State on April 14.

The abduction, which took place in the remote northeastern village of Chibok, has triggered an international outcry and protests in Nigeria, piling pressure on the government to bring the girls back.

Boko Haram members initially abducted 276 girls, but at least 53 of them managed to escape.

Nigeria is offering cash reward of USD 300,000 for anyone who can provide credible information leading to the rescue of the girls.

Boko Haram — whose name means “Western education is forbidden” — says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government.

Several regions of Nigeria have been hit by deadly violence in recent years. Over the past four years, violence in the north of Africa’s most populous country has claimed the lives of 3,600 people, including killings by the security forces.
