nsnbc : Two years after at least 48 including a pregnant woman were killed in Odessa, Ukraine, there has still not been a transparent investigation and nobody has been held accountable in a court of law. nsnbc previously published a detailed photo report that suggests that the massacre on May 2, 2014 was premeditated and carried out by right-wing militants.
The massacre in and around the trade union building in Odessa on May 2, 2014 stands out as one of the worst atrocities in Europe since the end of the second world war, and to be honest, the displacement of hundreds of thousands after the war. Family and loved ones and people from Odessa in general paid tribute to the dead by laying flowers and by gathering at the trade union building where the tragedy played out. Protests were organized by the “May 2 Group”, an advocacy group that calls for an independent, transparent and full investigation of the crimes that were perpetrated during the massacre.
The commemoration and protests were, however, held in a tense atmosphere. 3,000 extra law-enforcement officers have been deployed to the city, among them reportedly members of the ultra-right-wing and overtly neo-Nazi Azov Battalion. Vladimir Sarkisyan a member of the May 2 Group said: “Some politicians began speculating on the topic, and there are forces in the city interested in destabilization of the situation.”
Regional governor Mikhail Saakashvili, who is the former president of Georgia and a fugitive from justice there, warned Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko of the danger of the State’s collapse and called for the deployment of the National Guard in the region. Ironically, the National Guard has many ultra-nationalists from the Svoboda party and overt neo-Nazis in its higher echelons. Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov advised people to refrain from participating in any actions on May 2. Trukhanov said that he had heard threats from different sides that protesters would “be burned along with city hall”.
