Noel Kessel was part of the Rural Fire Services Northern Beaches Strike Team sent to Pitt Town an hour northwest of Sydney in the Hawkesbury area to help those seriously affected by the recent floods.

He told J-Wire: “There was widespread flood damage impacting numerous properties in the area. We were first tasked to help residents from a newly-built mansion totally ruined by the muddy waters which had engulfed the house.

We had to remove pretty much everything in the house and throw it into skip bins.

Kessel’s team was joined by a strike team from the Blue Mountains making a total of 50 RFS personnel at the property.

I spoke to a resident there who lost her house at Lake Conjola in the 2019-20 bushfires and now has lost her new house in the flood. All we could to help her was to give her reassurance and a hug.”

The area was very muddy and slippery with the added dangers of venomous spiders and snakes amongst the debris.

The water and mud were also all contaminated with sewerage, pesticides and other dangerous chemicals including asbestos debris.”

Kessel was very active in his RFS role in combatting last year’s bushfires.

Firefighter Noel Kessel is based at the Warringah HQ and Cottage Point stations. Being orthodox, he worked one day before Passover and two days during Chol Hamoed. After the festival completion on Sunday, Noel Kessel is expected to board his firetruck and head back to the flood-devasted to help in the salvage operations.
