Nose-biter escapes being sent to jail

A MAN who attacked his wife of 40 years with a knife and bit off the tip of her nose has escaped being sent to jail.

Peter Veljanoski, 59, was yesterday sentenced in the County Court to a two-year jail term, which was wholly suspended for two years.

Veljanoski had pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious injury.

The court heard Veljanoski attacked his wife, Strebrena, in a jealous rage on March 4.

Judge Barbara Cotterell said the attack was so severe Mrs Veljanoski required plastic surgery to have the tip of her nose reattached and was in hospital for eight days.

The judge said Veljanoski had acted with ”extraordinary violence”, but she noted he had been ”obsessively jealous” and harboured thoughts his wife had been seeing other men.

She acknowledged Veljanoski had a delusional disorder and mental health issues before the attack.
