Tea Party Republican Governor of Kentucky Matt Bevin tried to make life easier for Kim Davis by removing county clerk names from state-issued marriage licenses in order to legalize her plight against same-sex couples.

And yet, it is Davis’ relationship with the lawyers with Liberty Counsel that has drudged up more legal problems.

Thanks to an open records request filed by the Campaign for Accountability (CFA), Davis’ dealings with Liberty Counsel have come out, although it’s been a difficult road. In order to hide their relationship, Liberty Counsel claimed attorney-client privilege and even certain Kentucky-state laws to deny access to several documents.

And yet, in the end, after Liberty Counsel’s attempts “to manufacture a conflict” when refusing to adhere to the CFA’s request, the organization sent a new request letter and finally received word that they “can expect to receive the records the Attorney General found were withheld contrary to law.”

Liberty Counsel has a history of anti-LGBT movements – some of them outright violent in nature.

Anita Staver, lawyer with Liberty Counsel, made headlines last April when she tweeted about bringing her Glock .45 to the ladies room because it identifies as her bodyguard.

In her play on words, Staver displayed a shocking amount of violence and forced the national conversation to consider whether or not evangelical women were a danger in a public restroom.

Liberty Counsel’s work against same-sex marriage and women’s rights goes back a long way. Three years ago, they helped North Dakota state lawmakers not only write, but also offered legal defense of their stance that women should not have access to abortions.

Those organization claims non-profit status because all the lawyers on staff are evangelicals. They not only use their religion to evade paying taxes, but they also push forward for theocratic laws to be implemented on the state level as part the “state’s rights” argument.

The group’s founders, Matt and Anita Staver, are a Christian couple who have reputation as moonlighting as white supremacists.

Beyond that, it is Liberty Counsel’s contention that marriage equality is “shameful”.

Matt is quoted as saying: “It’s shameful for the Supreme Court for what they have done to marriage as it has been shameful in the history of the court with regards to the Dred Scott decision or the Buck v. Bell decision, where they said that the state of Virginia can forcibly sterilize her because of this eugenics idea that they want to eliminate the undesirables of the world. That was the shameful day that we ultimately look back with shame upon and I think this is going to be one of those same kind of situations.”

In their view , the idea of sexual equality is actually a “radical homosexual anarchist agenda” and good Christians should be protected from the LGBT community’s attempts to legislate “discrimination”. In the end, Liberty Counsel would like America to turn back to “biblical and traditional values” because same-sex marriage allows “those who openly flaunt expressly sinful and demonstrably self-destructive sexual behavior” to thrive.
