NSW’s 3500 prison guards are preparing to walk off the job after a Newcastle colleague was sentenced for assaulting an inmate.
Matt Bindley from the NSW prison officers’ union said the one-hour stop-work meeting on Friday was a show of support for Corrective Services officer Terry Dolling and a protest at his treatment.
CCTV footage emerged of the October 2011 incident that appeared to show Dolling repeatedly striking a prisoner who had spat at him.
He was on Thursday sentenced to seven months’ jail for the assault, with a four-month non-parole period.
A NSW Corrective Services spokeswoman would not comment on staffing arrangements during the stop-work meeting but Mr Bindley said a skeleton staff of executive officers would remain on duty.
