nsnbc : Mozambican President Felipe Nyusi, yesterday, held a meeting with Renamo leader Alfonso Dhlakama to discuss the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of Renamo fighters in the Mozambican military forces.

Felipe Nyusi and Alfonso Dhlakama, Mozambique, Feb 2018The meeting took place in Namadjiwa[also a.k.a. Nhamadjiwa, Nhamadjiua or Nhamagiwa], at the Vunduzi administrative post [also spelt Vanduzi]. in the Gorongosa district of Sofala province.

President Nyusi announced the meeting on his Facebook account saying: “We remain committed to bringing effective and lasting peace and laying the foundations for a prosperous and safe Mozambique for all.”

In July 2017 the ruling Frelimo party government agreed to the withdrawal of government troops from the eight positions mentioned by President Nyusi in compliance with the truce negotiated with Renamo.

The move was, despite all difficulties, the foundation for continued peace talks between arch rivals Frelimo and Renamo, also enabling the Renamo leadership to negotiate peace in good faith, while being able to convey to the Renamo basis that talks are leading somewhere and that the Frelimo party and administration have shown will to compromise.
