OIC condemns chemical attack in Syria

In a meeting with Iran’s permanent envoy to the OIC Hamidreza Dehqani, Ihsanoglu emphasized that the issue must be pursued through international bodies, including the United Nations.

On March 19, some 25 people were killed and over 100 others injured following a chemical attack in the town of Khan al-Assal near the major city of Aleppo. Damascus said foreign-backed militants fighting in the country had carried out the attack.

Dehqani, for his part, pointed to Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi’s condemnation of the deadly chemical attack and described the use of chemical weapons as inhumane.

On March 26, in a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Salehi called on the UN chief to dispatch an investigation team to probe the use of chemical arms by the militants in Syria.

The Iranian foreign minister stressed that the terrorist act represents a major threat to international peace and security and is an open violation of global norms, particularly the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Several international human rights organizations have accused the foreign-sponsored militants of committing war crimes in Syria.
