Cracking the Mystery of the Decapitated Meroë Head

Sometimes, modern archaeology reveals something that simply baffles us. Whether it is an item with inexplicable origins, or an out of place artifact, archaeology and history combined often leave us scratching our heads in confusion. The enigmatic Meroë head had that exact same impact when first discovered in 1910. It is a marvelous bronze head of Roman Emperor Augustus – but it was found thousands of kilometers away from Rome! Nevertheless, the puzzle of the Meroë head was finally solved through meticulous historical research.

Emperor Augustus’ Head Ends up in Distant Meroë

The conundrum began in 1910, during archeological excavations in modern-day Sudan, at the site of the ancient Nubian city of Meroë. While excavating a mound that was once a major temple at the site of the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kush, the lead British archeologist at the site, John Garstang, stumbled upon a curious find at a depth of two and a half meters (8 ft). Discovered beneath the staircase of the ancient temple, it was a 46.2 cm high (18 inches) bronze bust of the Roman Emperor Augustus , expertly made and perfectly preserved.

The archaeological community was stirred into a frenzy when the bronze head was unveiled as a genuine ancient masterpiece, displaying remarkable precision and intricate detailing. It was not completely unique, however, as similar busts had been found previously across the Roman world. But what made the Meroë head so special was the site of its discovery. Meroë was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Kush, the age-old enemy of ancient Egypt. The great distance between Meroë and the Roman world only added to the mystery surrounding the Meroë head.

Needless to say, it took some careful work to solve this historic quandary. Initially, it was reasonably presumed that the bronze bust originated in ancient Egypt rather than Rome. During the Roman occupation of Egypt, many Roman cultural aspects were adopted, and numerous busts and sculptures brought over. In fact, the ancient historian Strabo wrote that many important cities in Lower Egypt boasted fine sculptures of Emperor Augustus – often described as the “first” Roman Emperor and one of the most influential in its history.

The Meroë Head as Kushite Raid Booty

The Kushite Empire, an ancient Nubian realm, was warring with its northern neighbor Egypt for many centuries and raids were not uncommon. When the Romans appeared in Egypt, the Kushites were quick to oppose them, leading to the outbreak of war. During the reign of the Kushite Queen Amanirenas, the two realms were at war – from 25 to 22 BC. This was the definite Kushite attempt to stop the Romans from spreading further south into Africa. Queen Amanirenas was successful in this attempt and made numerous raids into Roman Egypt as a result.

Strabo wrote that the Kushites plundered many Roman cities, taking with them considerable booty. Their most prized loot included bronze busts and sculptures of the Emperor Augustus. The removal of these heads and busts served as a significant morale boost for the Kushites.

The enigmatic Meroë head was part of their spoils. In a clearly symbolic act, Queen Amanirenas buried it beneath the temple stairs – the same stairs that led upwards towards a Kushite altar of victory. That way the Kushite leaders and nobles would symbolically step on the Roman Emperor’s head, while triumphantly celebrating their victories.

The Romans Never Recovered the Meroë Head

Over the course of their war with the Kingdom of Kush, the Romans managed to retrieve many of the lost heads, which they saw as symbols of their power and cultural expansion. They were never again to see the Meroë head. The bust’s extraordinary beauty made it a highly coveted object, both to pillage and to retrieve. Nevertheless, Meroë, the capital of Kush, was a vast and formidable city with exceptional defenses that made it impregnable and gaining entry to the city was impossible.

And so it was that the marvelous bronze bust of Augustus lay dormant beneath Nubian sands for roughly 1,900 years, perfectly preserved by the dry and hot conditions. Long ago the Kushites disappeared and their cities crumbled to dust. The opportunity to symbolically step on the Emperor’s head was lost until the curious hands of a British explorer rediscovered it in 1910.

The Travels of the Meroë Head: From Egypt to Nubia to London

One of the most exquisite bronze busts ever uncovered by archaeologists, it is widely believed that the Meroë head was crafted in Egypt using high-quality molds imported from Rome. Created with astonishing precision, the bust boasts a realistic and distinctly Greek style and was likely produced around 27 BC. But it is one remarkable feature that truly sets it apart from other similar busts: the eyes.

Due to the sand’s ability to preserve it so flawlessly, the Meroë head managed to retain its artificial eyes, a feature that is often lost in other bronze busts. The eyes of this particular masterpiece are especially stunning, featuring irises made of calcite stone and inset glass pupils. This detail lends the face an unparalleled air of power and magnetism.

With the Meroë head’s mysterious origins solved, all we can so is stand back and admire its remarkable journey. From the skilled hands of Roman mold makers, to the bronze workshops of southern Egypt, and then into the eager hands of the Kushite raiders, it eventually traveled thousands of miles to London. The bust is housed in the British Museum , far from both Meroë and Rome. But it is exactly this that makes the Meroë head so special – showcasing the bust’s historic significance and underscoring the importance of preserving such artifacts for future generations.

Scenes from CPAC 2023

Despite the emerging field of Republican presidential candidates willing to take on former President Donald Trump, this year’s CPAC was more unabashedly MAGA than ever.

At the multi-day conference held just outside Washington, D.C., there were few signs the crowd wanted anyone but Trump in 2024. Many attendees wore coordinated T-R-U-M-P t-shirts. Vendors sold Trump bobbleheads and stuffed animals wearing MAGA hats. Guests posed for pictures in a mock Trump Oval Office.

The annual CPAC confab showcases stars in the conservative movement, prominent Republican lawmakers, the up-and-coming of the GOP and grassroots activists eager to hear about the latest priorities on the right.

But now CPAC has become the Trump show, and few Republicans here tried to diminish Trump’s star. Many potential 2024 candidates skipped the weekend entirely.

Introduced as “the next president of the United States,” Trump dished red meat to an adoring audience that leapt to their feet when he walked out on the main stage.

“We will finish what we started,” Trump told the audience. “We will cross the finish line. We will dismantle the Deep State. We will demolish woke tyranny and we will restore the American republic to all its radiant glory.”

Ronald Solomon sold merchandise at his stand, The MAGA Mall, where there were plenty of pro-Trump items to choose from.Attendees took selfies with some of their favorite special guests, among them Rep. Trump ties a ribbon on the most MAGA CPAC yet

OXON HILL, Md. — The plan went off without any real hitch: No Republican departed CPAC with more glory than former President Donald Trump. In fact, no one bothered to try.

As Trump walked onto the main stage Saturday night to give the keynote address, he was introduced as “the next president of the United States.”

At the four-day conference of conservative activists, Trump’s loyal fan base heckled his Republican opponents, overwhelmingly backed him in a straw poll and quickly booed what appeared to be a rogue audience member who started to play music over his speech. As they did throughout his presidency and the two years since, the MAGA movement showed up sporting buttons with Trump’s face, red hats and an eagerness to see the man the conference now orbits around completely.

Even Fox News, a network that has kept Trump at arm’s length in recent months, ended up airing some of his speech live on television following complaints from the CPAC mainstage a day earlier about a lack of Trump coverage.

In his one-hour, 45-minute CPAC finale speech, Trump boasted that the crowd here was firmly with him while bashing Republicans who were once stars of the annual confab.

“We had a Republican Party that was ruled by freaks, neocons, globalists, open border zealots, and fools, but we are never going back to the party of Paul Ryan, Karl Rove, and Jeb Bush,” Trump said to the crowd. “People are tired of RINOs and globalists. They want to see America First.”

Speaking to a not-quite-full convention hall, Trump painted a bleak picture of the current state of the world, complained about the numerous investigations he faces and described his run for president as the “final battle” for his supporters.

“Either they win or we win. And if they win, we no longer have a country,” Trump said.

Earlier, during a gaggle with reporters, Trump said he would “absolutely” stay in the 2024 race even if indicted in any of the investigations he faces over handling of classified documents and the aftermath of the 2020 election.

Trump received some of the loudest applause from the audience when taking on culture war battles over parental rights and women’s sports. And while he railed about election laws, he drastically changed his tune on mail-in ballots and early voting. “We have to change our thinking because some bad things happened,” Trump said. “You have to do it.”

The annual conference once welcomed Republicans of all stripes, but this year it was clearly steeped in MAGA. Beyond Trump, headliners included some of the former president’s most loyal allies in Congress. And while there were other 2024 contenders like former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and “anti-woke” entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, the biggest threat to Trump’s presidential run, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and other prominent Republicans were hundreds of miles away.

That didn’t seem to matter to the crowd here.

Supporters of former President Donald Trump react during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. on March 4, 2023.

During one of the most rousing speeches of the multi-day conference, former Trump adviser and conservative talk show host Steve Bannon on Friday suggested that the Republican primary starting to play out was a futile exercise.

“Don’t fall for the primary stuff,” Bannon said from the CPAC stage. “You have good and decent people. Gov. DeSantis, Mike Pompeo, Tim Scott, you have Nikki Haley — that’s all fine. It’s not relevant.”

Bannon continued by telling the crowd they “don’t have time for on-the-job training” for a new leader, when Republicans have “a man that gave us four years — four years — of peace and prosperity.”

“Buckle up,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), the No. 3 House Republican, told POLITICO in an interview at the conclusion of the conference. “Trump is going to win the primary and defeat Joe Biden.”

It was a sentiment shared by most CPAC attendees — who literally wore their Trump support on their sleeve, like one attendee with a tattoo of Trump’s face. People wore Trump T-shirts and bedazzled Trump clutches. They posed for photos in a mock Trump Oval Office set up by a pro-Trump super PAC, complete with a faux Resolute Desk that was sourced from a souvenir shop near the White House. Overall, they seemed uninterested in any other 2024 candidate. And many weren’t exactly polite about their unwavering support for Trump.

Despite garnering applause throughout parts of her speech, Haley stepped out of the main hall Friday to a crowd of MAGA hat-wearing hecklers. Part of the mob surrounding her broke out in chants of “Trump.”

And during a speech by Ramaswamy, another declared presidential candidate, a voice in the crowd shouted out “Trump 2024!” Ramaswamy sought to defuse the brief moment of tension, saying he “love(s) the man” and would discuss the former president later in his speech.

But when Ramaswamy got to that point, he didn’t take even a minor swipe at Trump, as he had initially planned. Excerpts from his prepared speech, obtained by POLITICO beforehand, showed that Ramaswamy was going to say that he respects Trump and believes he cares about national unity, but Trump would have already delivered on unifying the country if he had truly intended to do so.

“That’s what I can deliver that he can’t,” Ramaswamy had planned to say, according to the prepared remarks.

Instead, Ramaswamy skipped over that line, only saying that both he and Trump care about national unity.

Save for a couple of vague comments that could be construed as digs at Trump — Pompeo cautioning against following “celebrity leaders” with “fragile egos who refuse to acknowledge reality,” and Haley again calling for competency tests for politicians over 75 — no one dared to criticize the former president.

Trump’s rivals, however, were by no means rewarded by him for holding their fire. A few hours before he took the stage on Saturday, Trump posted a meme on his social media app of rows of empty chairs while Haley was on stage Friday. “Nikki Haley speaking at CPAC,” was emblazoned across the bottom of the image.

But Trump mostly held off when he was asked by reporters ahead of his speech about a potential DeSantis challenge and what it says about his own leadership if former Trump administration officials, like Haley, are getting in the race. Many Trump allies see an advantage with a large primary field, with the non-Trump candidates potentially splintering the vote — a scenario similar to the one that played out in the 2016 primary.

“I really say the more the merrier. I mean, they think they did a good job,” Trump said. “They’re very ambitious people, but they think they did a good job.”

Despite holding off on the broadsides, Trump did not commit to signing any kind of loyalty pledge in order to participate in RNC debates.

“There are people I probably wouldn’t be very happy about endorsing … I won’t use names, I don’t want to insult anyone, but I wouldn’t be happy about it,” Trump said.

Trump overwhelmingly won CPAC’s conference straw poll, garnering 62 percent support from attendees compared to 20 percent for DeSantis. Trump’s 40-point margin was similar to straw polls conducted at prior years’ CPAC events, illustrating the former president’s enduring grip on the party’s activist class.

Audience members react during former President Donald Trump's speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. on March 4, 2023.

But the poll did feature one twist: Perry Johnson, a little-known Michigan millionaire and failed gubernatorial candidate who announced his presidential run last week, earned 5 percent support. That put Johnson in third place, ahead of Haley and Ramaswamy.

Johnson, whose bus was prominently parked outside the Gaylord National, had the only campaign booth in the CPAC exhibit hall on Thursday. His staffers passed out branded items and invited guests to attend a VIP reception while also encouraging attendees to cast a vote for him in the straw poll.

The conference once attracted a broad spectrum of conservative voices from Paul Ryan to Rick Santorum. But now, it has become almost entirely focused on Trump and the America First movement he inspired. On Friday night at the annual Ronald Reagan Dinner, attendees paid $375 for a steak and fish dinner and to hear from Kari Lake, the failed gubernatorial candidate who is considering a run for Senate in Arizona and is a popular Trump surrogate.

“We took the whole thing over,” said conservative radio host John Fredericks, calling this year’s event the “disruptor CPAC of all time.”

Some of the GOP’s top leaders didn’t show at the large gathering this year, while a past major sponsor, Fox News, also steered clear. Matt Schlapp, who heads CPAC, has not appeared on the network since allegations surfaced in January that he sexually assaulted a GOP campaign staffer in October — a claim Schlapp denies.

“CPAC was a sanitized, corporatized, Wall Street-backed organization with big donors. They’re all eradicated,” Fredericks said. “The populist movement has taken it over.”

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., his daughter in law, Lara Trump, and future daughter in law, Kimberly Guilfoyle, were main-stage speakers. Other headliners included some of Trump’s biggest allies in Congress, like Sen. J.D. Vance from Ohio and Rep. Matt Gaetz from Florida. But notably, the only member of Republican congressional leadership to attend was Stefanik, the New York congresswoman who was one of the first to endorse Trump for president. She said the support for Trump at CPAC was a reflection of the “grassroots,” adding, “Trump is in the strongest position by a longshot.”

“I don’t know about you guys, but this feels like MAGA Country,” Trump Jr. said as he took the stage on Friday, instructing attendees to check under their seats for a gold chocolate bar — “a golden ticket,” he said, for entry to an exclusive reception Saturday held by a super PAC supporting his father.

Trump Jr. then quickly pivoted to attacking other Republicans mulling a primary run against Trump, most of whom skipped CPAC to attend a Club for Growth donor retreat in Palm Beach this weekend. Among those appearing at the anti-tax group’s cattle call were DeSantis, Haley, Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu. Trump was not invited to attend the dueling event.

“They’re raising money from the people who don’t necessarily believe in America First,” Trump Jr. continued. “But they need their money.”

At the Club for Growth event, DeSantis touted his record as Florida governor and criticized Republicans who have sat like “potted plants” during “woke ideology” debates, according to Fox News. Haley sought to make her case for being the GOP alternative to Trump, calling herself “decisive” for officially getting in the primary while other candidates at the retreat were “hemming and hawing on the sidelines.”

“All the major conferences that cater to the grassroots are with MAGA and the people are with Trump,” said Alex Bruesewitz, a Republican strategist and influencer. “The donors are with the Washington establishment Republicans — and there is a major disconnect.”

Ronald Solomon speaks with Lisa Giulianelli at his merchandise stand at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. on March 2, 2023.

This year’s CPAC had the usual trappings of the annual grassroots confab, like an exhibition hall filled with an assortment of pro-Trump paraphernalia and information booths for businesses run by or catering to Republicans, such as a booth for the Right Stuff, a dating app for right wing singles run by a former top Trump White House aide, Johnny McEntee.

Inside a private reception ahead of Trump’s speech, an event sponsored by a super PAC supporting him, Make America Great Again Inc., showed off right-wing luminaries who have remained loyal endorsers of Trump.

Gaetz and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) were whisked through the crowd as attendees chowed down on Rice Krispy Treats, brownies and miniature cupcakes. The pair walked on stage to entertain the audience while Trump took questions from reporters in another room prior to making his appearance before the VIP crowd. Lake and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) trickled in separately, stopping to take photos with members of the invite-only audience.

And throughout his public speech Saturday, Trump at times paused to acknowledge some of his high-profile supporters in the audience who have continued to stick with him as a primary field has emerged. Trump praised people like Greene, Gaetz, right-wing talk show host Mark Levin and others — flaunting the conservative influencers who have tied themselves to him despite others in the party quietly pushing for his replacement.

“I didn’t know this was a rally, Matt,” Trump said to Schlapp as he stepped up the lectern to a chorus of “USA” chants in the audience. “It really is a rally.”

Demonic Possession and the Ancient Practice of Exorcism on the Rise?

Belief in malevolent spirits inhabiting the human body has persisted across cultures for millennia. During the Middle Ages, exorcisms were commonplace to rid individuals of supposed demonic possession. In modern society, the view is that these practices are outdated, and possession is regarded as a manifestation of mental illness. Despite this, the Catholic Church has reported a surge in requests for exorcisms. Is this truly evidence of a revival in cases of demonic possession, or is it simply a media-fueled phenomenon?

While the practice of exorcism has a long history in many different religions, it is most commonly associated with the Christian faith. In the New Testament of the Christian Bible, Jesus is depicted as exorcising demons from possessed individuals. The early Christian church also believed in the reality of demonic possession and considered it a serious spiritual affliction. During the Middle Ages, exorcism became a formalized practice within the Catholic Church, with specific guidelines and rituals established for performing the ceremony.

Demonic Possession on the Rise?

In 2013, the Roman Catholic Church announced that they were training up a  new army of exorcists  to meet the growing demand for experts to rid people of evil spirits. The Church claims that the “unprecedented rise” in requests for exorcism comes from more people dabbling in the ‘dark arts’ with the help of information found on the internet.

“Diabolical possessions are on the increase as a result of people subscribing to occultism,” said Fr Francesco Bamonte, the president of the Italy-based International Association for Exorcists. “The few exorcists that we have in the dioceses are often not able to handle the enormous number of requests for help,” he told La Repubblica. In 2018, the Vatican-backed International Association of Exorcists , said the increase represented a “pastoral emergency.”

“Demonic” possession is said to manifest itself in people babbling in languages foreign to them, shaking uncontrollably and vomiting nails, pieces of metal and shards of glass, according to those who believe in the phenomenon. They must undergo the official Catholic rite of exorcism, which involves a consecrated priest invoking the name of God, as well as various saints and the Archangel Michael, to cast out their demons, and using holy water, rosary beads, and the sign of the cross.

Gabriele Amorth (1925 – 2016 AD) was a Catholic priest and exorcist of the Diocese of Rome who reported he had performed over 160,000 exorcisms in the course of his ministry. He attributed the number of exorcisms performed to his opinion that “People have lost the Faith, and superstition, magic, Satanism, or ouija boards have taken its place, which then open all the doors to the presence of demons.”

The Catholic Church is not the only religious organization to conduct rites to rid a person of demonic possession. Virtually every religious and cultural tradition worldwide has espoused the idea of spirit possession and the need for some form of exorcism, and this custom dates back thousands of years.

Exorcisms Through Time

While exorcism is most commonly associated with the Christian faith, it is also practiced in other religions, including Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. In Islam, exorcism is known as ruqyah, and involves reciting specific verses from the Quran to expel the demon. In Judaism, exorcism is known as the Baal Shem Tov, and involves the use of specific prayers and rituals. In Hinduism, exorcism involves the use of mantras and the worship of specific deities. In Buddhism, exorcism involves the use of prayer, meditation, and visualization techniques.

In ancient Mesopotamia, it was believed that all forms of sickness came from powerful spirits entering a person’s body and attaching to a person.  Assyrian tablets make reference to the use of incantations and prayers to the gods, as well as direct challenges to demons, which were believed to inflict every type of disease, both physical and psychological. Ancient Babylonian priests performed rituals by destroying a clay or wax image of a demon.

Accounts from ancient Persia, dating back to around 600 BC, offer evidence of exorcism using prayer, ritual, and holy water by the religious leader Zoroaster, who was considered the first magician, and who founded the religion Zoroastrianism.

In Christianity, there are many references to Jesus performing exorcisms, and the ability to cast our evil spirits was a sign of a true disciple. In one well known story, Jesus encountered a madman and commanded that the foul spirits leave him; the spirits then entered into a herd of pigs, which ran over a cliff and drowned in the waters below.

Brutality in Exorcisms

The Middle Ages (500-1500AD) saw a revival of ancient superstition and demonology and mental illness was seen to be the result of evil possession.  The barbaric treatment of mental illnesses was primarily left to the clergy who exorcised patients through a variety of techniques which caused physical pain, such as scourging.

The best-known case of possession in Western European history took place in the French town of Loudun in 1632 AD. A group of nuns at the Ursuline convent in Loudun were alleged to be possessed by demons and displayed convulsions, shouting, barking, and fits of laughter. A local priest named Urbain Grandier was accused of being the cause of their possession. Grandier was arrested, tried, and ultimately executed for sorcery, despite his claims of innocence.

According to The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley, during the exorcisms performed on the nuns, they were subjected to physical abuse, including being slapped, pinched, and pricked with needles. Some were even forced to drink their own urine or eat excrement as a means of purging the demon from their bodies. These practices were highly controversial and were ultimately condemned by the Church.

In 1614, the Church established guidelines for exorcism that aimed to prevent abuse and ensure that only trained clergy were performing exorcisms. In 1999, the Vatican issued a revised Rite of Exorcism that emphasized the importance of distinguishing between genuine possession and other forms of mental or physical illness.

Over the centuries, the rites of exorcism have included the use of prayers, commands, fumigations, holy water, hellebore, rue, salt, and roses.  However, exorcisms have also attracted their fair share of skepticism.  Many scientists believe that so-called demonic possession is simply a form of mental illness, such as hysteria, mania, psychosis, Tourette’s syndrome, schizophrenia or personality disorder.  Skeptics claim that the illusion that exorcism works on people experiencing symptoms of possession is attributed to the power of suggestion, or the placebo effect, which has also been used to explain phenomenon such as faith healing.

Beliefs in spirit possession have remained virtually unchanged since the beginning of civilization and still exist to this day. But whether possession by demonic forces is real or simply the result of a medical or psychological imbalance is still hotly debated.

From Ancient Mystery School to Culture Capital: Eleusis’ Secret Past is Recognized

The ancient city of Eleusis in Greece was the site of one of the most mysterious and revered religious rites of ancient Greece, the Eleusinian Mysteries . The exact nature of the rituals performed during the Mysteries is shrouded in secrecy, as initiates were sworn to silence and no written records of the ceremonies exist. The Mysteries were so highly regarded that participation in the rituals was considered a pinnacle of spiritual experience in ancient Greece, and their influence extended to the highest echelons of Greek society. Now Eleusis, home of the mystery school, has been designated as the 2023 Culture Capital of Europe.

Eleusis, also spelled Elefsina, is located 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) northwest of Athens in Greece. The Eleusinian Mystery school , which practiced secret religious rituals honoring the gods Demeter and Persephone, was based there. The festival of the Eleusinian Mysteries involved a journey of initiation and a symbolic reenactment of Persephone’s descent into and return from the underworld.

According to an article in Greek Reporter , the ancient Greek city of Eleusis is now celebrating its nomination as the 2023 “Culture Capital of Europe,” along with the cities of Timișoara in Romania and Veszprém-Balaton in Hungary.

A Mystery Under Every Block of Stone

Eleusis is a thriving matrix of archaeological sites and visitor attractions. Ancient sites such as the Sanctuary of Demeter and the Roman city of Eleusis are knitted together with museums and cultural institutions such as the Archaeological Museum and Municipal Gallery .

The city of Eleusis is currently being revitalized, and many new sites are being prepared for public display, for the city has been designated as a 2023 European Capital of Culture . And when all the works are complete the city will host an incredible range of well-considered exhibitions and events highlighting the region’s long and mysterious religious history.

Indulging In Mystery

The Eleusinian Mysteries are ancient religious rites that date back to the Mycenaean period, around 1600 BC to 1100 BC. Ancient Greeks attended the festival each year from around 1600 BC to 392 AD and the ancient annual festival was regarded as the absolute most sacred of all the mysteries in the Ancient Greek religion.

It is generally agreed that the rituals were seeded by older agrarian cults, and archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of a private building beneath the Telesterion , which is considered as the main hall used for ritual performances and reenactments. The Eleusinian Mysteries are often described as both sacred and ‘secret’ rites, because virtually nothing is known about the rituals. However, mainstream archaeologists maintain that participants walked along the “Sacred Way” in a parade that lasted ten days.

Finally, when they reached the Temple of Demeter, abstaining from food for 3 days they consumed a sacred hallucinogenic drink called “Kykeon.”

Tripping Over Calendars

High on Kykeon, participants danced ecstatically and re-enacted the story of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, and her daughter, Persephone, who was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld. Demeter’s search for her daughter caused the crops to die, so Zeus told Persephone she could spend half the year with her mother on earth and the other half with Hades in the underworld.

If you didn’t already see the archetypes in this story, read it again and consider the changing of the seasons. The earth flourished when Persephone was together with Demeter, and crops withered when she was with Hades. Demeter represented motherly love and grief, while Persephone represented the eternal cycles of life and death.

Revitalizing That Which Has Passed

The Homeric Hymn mentions “the palace of King Keleos,” at Eleusis, which was mentioned in ancient Greek myths, further indicating the antiquity of the Eleusinian Mysteries and their importance in Greek religious history. Eleusis was also the birthplace of the great ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus (525/524 – c. 456/455 BC) an ancient Greek tragedian, who is often described as the father of tragedy.

Eleusis city officials have now drawn up a really attractive program of historically themed events which will unfold over 2023. Entitled “ Mysteries of Transition the website says “192 Greek and 137 international artists in seventeen different disciplines will deliver 465 events in thirty different locations.” According to Greek Reporter , to entrap these values, the 2023 event schedule is built on “three thematic pillars: people, society, and environment and work.”

The free public Opening Ceremony was held on February 4, 2023, on the city’s seafront, representing the official start of the 2023 artistic program celebrating Eleusis becoming the 2023 European Capital of Culture. City officials are confident that their nomination will attract tens of thousands of archaeo-tourists  from all over the world.

You can join the Ancient Origins Greek Tour in August and join them, as the Mysteries of Eleusis – 2023 Culture Capital of Europe is on the exciting itinerary.

Ezr 9:10  And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,
Ezr 9:11  Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.
Ezr 9:12  Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
Ezr 9:13  And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;
Ezr 9:14  Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?
Ezr 9:15  O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

Sisi: Egypt Revolution a ‘death certificate’

Egyptians come together, participating in the revolution that took place on 25th January [Twitter]

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has stated that the 25 January Revolution was a "death certificate" for the Egyptian state, Arabi21.com reported on Friday. He claimed that the Egyptian Revolution against late dictator Hosni Mubarak introduced the government as an enemy of the Egyptian people. Al-Sisi explained: "The enemy attempted to make sedition in Al-Minya and many other governorates. They attempted to damage the Egyptian state, and every Egyptian family paid the price for stability." Al-Sisi announced that the Egyptian administrative apparatus is working to offer "the best services" to the Egyptian people, claiming that all developed countries suffer from the lack of offering good services to their people. To Hell or Bust!

I view the human herd from the experiences of countless incarnations-
Never achieving what they could have, never meeting my expectations-

It was such an opportunity for their souls to move up the food chain-
Yet bleating in fear clueless slaughterhouse sheep they remain-

Why could they never see the entrance of the path which leads to God’s love-
Why did they time after time help the jackals to slaughter the white dove-

With aspiration I tried again and again to explain to them the truth of facts-
Only to have the truth like water off a duck run off their bowed against truth backs-

In the end just one more failed group of primitive souls-
Which Loved the lie, slavery and the dark side’s goals-

In the timelessness which is the currency of the universe-
I suppose one species inability to successfully transverse-

From primitive clueless beast of burden to advanced spiritual beings-
Their inability of the Greatness of God and advancement to be seeing-

Is a personal choice which their own souls in agony must pay-
When the Books of Balance, accounts payable are opened on that day!

It still brings sadness to see such a golden opportunity trampled in the dust-
But it is the sheep’s choice, their ultimate desire, to Hell or bust!

Trump’s Promises ‘Quantum Leap’ for a New America

Former President Donald Trump has revealed his dream for a new America ahead of the 2024 presidential race, promising to bring back the country’s boldness “in a very big way” and heralding a “quantum leap” in living standards.

“Past generations of Americans pursued big dreams and daring projects that once seemed absolutely impossible. They pushed across an unsettled continent and built new cities in the wild frontier. They transformed American life with the interstate highway system, magnificent it was, and they launched a vast network of satellites into orbit all around the earth. But today, our country has lost its boldness. Under my leadership, we will get it back in a very big way,” Trump said in a video address released Friday.

“If you look at just three years ago, what we were doing was unthinkable. How good it was, how great it was for our country. Our objective will be a quantum leap in the American standard of living. That’s what will happen.”

Pointing out that a third of the American landmass is owned by the federal government, Trump noted that just a “very small portion of that land” amounting to “one-half of one percent” can be used to hold a contest to “charter up to 10 new cities and award them to the best proposals for development.”

“In other words, we’ll actually build new cities in our country again. These Freedom Cities will reopen the frontier, reignite American imagination, and give hundreds of thousands of young people and other people, all hard-working families, a new shot at home ownership and in fact the American dream.”

Transportation, Manufacturing

A “big opportunity” that Trump cites in the video is in the transportation sector. In the United States and China, numerous companies are “racing” to develop vertical takeoff and landing vehicles.

In the last century, it was the United States that led the automotive revolution. “I want to ensure that America, not China, leads the revolution in air mobility. These breakthroughs can transform commerce, bring a giant infusion of wealth into rural America, and connect families in our country in new ways,” Trump said.

An American company engaged in vertical takeoff vehicle development is California-based Wisk. Last January, Wisk announced that it had secured $450 million in funding from Boeing.

In August, San Jose-based Archer Aviation received a $10 million deposit from United Airlines for an order of 100 electric takeoff and landing air taxis.

Trump also proposed a “strategic national manufacturing initiative” that will turn “forgotten communities into hives of industry.” This will ensure that these communities produce goods that the United States will no longer have to import from China. The initiative is going to be “very, very successful.”

The American manufacturing sector is currently struggling through various challenges like inflation, talent scarcity, supply chain problems, and economic uncertainty.

“Manufacturers continue to grapple with talent challenges that may limit the industry’s growth momentum. Moreover, supply-chain issues, including sourcing bottlenecks, global logistics backlogs, cost pressures, and cyberattacks, will likely remain critical challenges in 2023,” Deloitte said in its 2023 manufacturing outlook report.

Lowering Costs, Other Initiatives

Trump also promised to introduce a “major initiative” to lower the cost of living, especially focusing on reducing the cost of a new car and the cost of building single-family homes.

Annual inflation has remained above 6 percent every single month since October 2021. New vehicle inflation has remained above 5 percent every month since June 2021.

The median sales price of homes in the country hit $467,000 in the fourth quarter, up 10. 4 percent from the same period a year back. The United States is estimated to be facing a shortage of 3.8 million to 5 million homes.

Trump also intends to ask Congress to support “baby bonuses” for young parents, a move he hopes will trigger a “baby boom.”

He promised to carry out a “great modernization and beautification campaign” in 50 states that will get rid of ugly buildings, refurbish public spaces and parks, ensure a pristine environment, make cities and towns more livable, and build “towering monuments to our true American heroes.”

“Very importantly, I will also make sure all of these new places are safe. We love and cherish our police. They will do the job the way they have to,” Trump said.

“It is time to start talking about greatness for our country again. I will dramatically increase living standards and build a future that brings our country together through excitement, opportunity, and success.”

Mechanic Sees Drivers Trapped on Icy Road in Brutal Winter Storm, Frees Them for 7 Hours Till 6 A.M

A brutal winter storm struck the western U.S. from Arizona to Wyoming last month, seeing many motorists stranded for long hours in cold weather and abandoned cars littering the highways.

Twenty drivers trapped in a blizzard in Washington state on Feb. 22 have a pair of local heroes to thank for pulling them out.

Uber driver Alec Higley, 27, from La Center was en route to a client when he got trapped in traffic on the Columbia Boulevard exit off of 82nd Avenue in the storm.

Deep ruts in the icy road made driving impossible for many.

He proceeded to call his best friend since kindergarten, Jonathon Gilbert, 27, an off-road enthusiast and owner of Honest Jon’s Auto.

Gilbert didn’t need to be asked to help a friend.

“I didn’t even ask him to come help; he just offered,” Higley told The Epoch Times. “He went to La Center to help out his family and told me he was on his way. He even brought food!”

Higley had been stuck for about seven hours by the time Gilbert arrived in his Pathfinder at 11 p.m.

Pulling out his tow straps, he set to work helping haul out Higley’s Tesla 3 and made short work of it.

Then, seeing all the other stranded motorists, they decided to stay and help them. Gilbert said he didn’t have anywhere important to be anyway.

(Courtesy of Alec Higley)

“He proceeded to tow over 20 cars,” Higley said. “[He] even attempted to pull the semi-truck up the hill and managed to move it enough to open the off ramp and clear the highway to dozens of other vehicles that had been waiting to get through for hours.”

Helping his community comes naturally for Gilbert.

“I believe that if you have the capacity to help someone you should do it,” he told the newspaper. “I’m also a 4×4 enthusiast. There were so many cars; it was kind of a call of duty.

“We were out there till 6 a.m. helping drivers, roughly 7-8 hours total.”

Their efforts had a snowball effect. With those cars out of the way, some 20 more drivers were able to get clear and take the off ramp.

They were “incredibly thankful and happy” to head home, the mechanic said.

Gilbert’s business has a reputation for having the “most friendly service” with the “lowest costs in the area.” Nor does he charge any overhead like traditional garage stations.

Higley touted Gilbert’s off-road accomplishments.

“[He] has a lot of skill with anything to do with vehicles,” Higley said, adding that Gilbert can “fix and build anything.”

Gilbert’s involvement with the Gambler 500, an Oregon-based long distance off-road rally, helped him help his community.

“He has always done good, honest work at a good price,” Higley added. “He’s done work for free for friends in need and is always willing to help anyone he can any chance he gets.”

Nevada Crash Is 3rd Fatal One Tied to Air Medical Service

RENO, Nev.—The company that owns the medical transport aircraft that crashed in northern Nevada last week, killing all five people aboard, has been tied to two other fatal crashes in the last four years.

A review of records shows that with the latest crash, 11 people total have now died on planes owned and operated by Guardian Flight, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported Friday.

The company is also now facing its fourth National Transportation Safety Board probe since 2018, said Bruce Landsberg, NTSB vice chairman.

A single-engine Pilatus PC12 was heading from Reno to Salt Lake City on Feb. 24 when investigators say it broke apart. It plummeted to the ground near rural Stagecoach, 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Reno. The dead included pilot, Scott Walton, 46, and two medical crew members, Edward Pricola, 32, and Ryan Watson, 27. The patient was Mark Rand, 69. His wife, Terri Rand, 66, had been accompanying him.

Sarah Sulick, a spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, said Thursday a seven-member team sent to Nevada over the weekend to investigate the crash was wrapping up the on-site portion of their investigation. She said the team recovered electronic navigation equipment from the plane at the crash site and has sent it to the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., for analysis.

A preliminary report outlining the agency’s initial findings will be released “in the next week or so,” Sulick said, while a final report containing the crash’s probable cause is expected within the next two years.

The flight was a Care Flight, which is a service of REMSA Health. Care Flight’s aviation vendor is Guardian Flight. REMSA has grounded its Care Flights for now.

Jena Esposito, KPS3 PR manager and a spokesperson for REMSA, declined comment and deferred inquiries to Guardian Flight, which did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

NTSB investigators document the wreckage of a Pilatus PC-12 airplane at the crash site in Dayton, Nev., on Feb. 26, 2023. (NTSB via AP)

Private services for the Care Flight crew killed are expected to take place over the next week. Care Flight plans to hold a public memorial service for crash victims Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

Guardian Flight has more than 60 aircraft flying out of 60 locations, including Hawaii and Alaska.

In December, a Hawaii Life Flight medical transport crew was en route to get a patient when they crashed into the ocean off Maui. Investigators found the bodies of the three crew members and wreckage a month later. The cause is still under investigation.

In January 2019, a medical transport aircraft crashed outside Juneau, Alaska. A pilot, nurse, and paramedic on their way to get transport a patient were killed. The bodies of the crew have yet to be found. After a nearly two-year investigation, the NTSB could not determine the cause.

A 2018 crash in Arizona did not result in any fatalities. Authorities say it was caused by autopilot error and pilot overcorrection.

An aviation attorney representing relatives of the Rands, who died in the Feb. 24 crash, told the AP that the tragedy was “absolutely preventable.”

“It really starts with the decision to go in the first place, which never should have been made,” said Dan Rose, a former Navy pilot who has been litigating aviation cases for 25 years.

Rose said he is looking forward to NTSB’s preliminary report, which he hopes will provide more details about the overall conditions at the time of the nighttime crash, which occurred amid a winter storm.

He declined to say what condition Mark Rand suffered from. But it wasn’t “life critical,” and he had been dealing with it for several months before the crash.

5 Benefits of Investing in Wood Furniture

By Katie Laughridge
From Tribune News Service

Creating an inspired space takes the right combination of elements. Accessories and art and lighting and a plethora of textiles are in the mix, but the pieces that build the foundation from which a room is built are upholstered pieces and case goods. I’ll take every chance I get to talk about upholstery since it marries my loves of functional art, handmade products, and textiles. But it’s time to let wood furniture shine.

While various options are available on the market, wood furniture has always been a classic and timeless choice that offers both durability and beauty to a room. With a wide range of styles and finishes available, investing in wood furniture can be an excellent way to elevate the look and feel of your home or office, while also providing long-term value—and pieces to be passed down through generations.

Let’s explore a few of my favorite benefits of investing in wood furniture.

1. Quality Wood Furniture Lasts a Lifetime

Buying cheaply made furniture may save you money upfront, but it will cost you more in the long run. When estimating the value of a piece, look beyond the sticker price and instead estimate the cost per use of an item over its lifespan. If you compare the price to the number of years a high-quality piece is likely to remain in use, wood wins every time.

When I say wood furniture can last a lifetime, that’s really selling a lot of pieces short. Many wood tables, chests and cabinets last many lifetimes, passed down from generation to generation. I’ve been fortunate to have been given a beloved hope chest and dining room pieces used by my great-grandparents, and I love them more every year.

If you compare the price to the number of years a high-quality piece is likely to remain in use, wood wins every time. (Provided photo/TNS)

2. Wood Tones Are One of a Kind

One of our favorite things about designing with wood is its one-of-a-kind character. From an investment standpoint, wood scores definite points for uniqueness. Even if a table is made from the same species of wood, every piece of furniture will ultimately look different from the next because the grain and natural tones of the wood are unique to each individual tree from which the lumber is sourced. Incorporating wood tones are a subtle way to bring the distinctive textures of the outdoors in.

3. Wood Pieces Are Versatile

Truly nothing beats the versatility of wooden furniture. Pieces like chests of drawers are so flexible—they can work tucked into a nook or a hallway, or they can serve as a dresser or as nightstands (for those of us with small closets). A great console can welcome guests in an entryway one year, divide a room and display gorgeous lamps behind the sofa the next, only to be tucked into a nook the following year for a fresh work-from-home space.

Truly nothing beats the versatility of wooden furniture. (Provided photo/TNS)

4. Wood Tones Are Playful

Wood’s ability to mix, mingle and blend is unmatched. Using multiple wood tones in a room creates flow and movement. I firmly believe that when executing a design, wood pieces are things you can play with. A stained piece of wood furniture, or one painted in a neutral black or white, can move freely through many a space, something that not every piece of furniture with a bold color or specific pattern can offer.

Wood’s ability to mix, mingle and blend is unmatched. (Provided photo/TNS)

5. Wood Is Easy Maintenance

Most wood furniture can be easily maintained by simply periodically wiping it down with a damp cloth then wiping away remaining moisture with a dry cloth. We recommend that you use cotton, as synthetic fibers can cause surface scratches on soft woods and finishes. When considering a wood piece, be sure to ask your designer if it comes with any special cleaning instructions as some specialty finishes require a little extra TLC. As with anything you buy, misuse and little accidents can create damage over time—which is why we always keep coasters on hand in our living room (even if our kiddo never takes the hint!).
