Pakistan test-fires new ballistic missile

The Hatf-II missile, which would carry nuclear as well as conventional warheads, has a range of approximately 180 km, the military said on Monday.

“The test provides an operational level capability to Pakistan’s strategic forces, in addition to the strategic and technical level capability which Pakistan already possesses,” the military said.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani congratulated the military over the successful missile test.

The nuclear-armed Pakistan and India routinely carry out missile tests despite a peace process they launched in early 2004.

The two South Asian neighbors, which conducted tit-for-tat nuclear weapons tests in 1998, now inform each other of missile tests in advance.

Pakistan and India have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947 and came close to a fourth in 2002.
