Pakistani UN peacekeeper killed in CAR

A Pakistani peacekeeper has been killed in an attack on a United Nations convoy in the Central African Republic (CAR).

According to the head of the UN mission in the CAR, eight other soldiers were injured in the attack which took place in the capital Bangui on Thursday.

This is reportedly the first fatality among UN forces in the Central African Republic since they undertook the peacekeeping mission in the violence-ravaged country in mid-September.

The Central African Republic descended into chaos last December, when Christian armed groups launched coordinated attacks against the Seleka Muslim group that toppled the government in March 2013.

France later invaded its former colony after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution giving the African Union and Paris the go-ahead to send troops there.
