Paul Ryan: Congress will stop using taxpayer funds to settle sex harassment suits

House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Wednesday that Congress will no longer use taxpayer dollars to settle sexual harassment claims against lawmakers.

“That’s among the things we’re working on right now” as part of a package of reforms, Ryan said in an interview with Wisconsin radio station WISN.

Three lawmakers have recently stepped down over sexual harassment or misconduct claims.

This month, Texas Rep. Blake Farenthold announced he would reimburse taxpayers the $84,000 his office used to settle a sexual harassment lawsuitbrought by his former spokeswoman.

Former Michigan Rep. John Conyers allegedly used $27,000 in taxpayer funds to settle a wrongful dismissal charge by a former employee in 2015. He resigned this month amid multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.
