Police arrest protestors in Valencia

The clashes broke out on Monday after students protesting against education budget cuts held a demonstration outside a school and came up against police barricades.

Witnesses at the scene said that baton-wielding police in helmets and body armor charged the protestors, beating and dragging people along the ground. Spanish media outlets reported that up to 21 people, including several minors, were arrested in the incident.

However, Valencia regional police chief Antonio Moreno told reporters that police used “proportionate physical force.”

A Valencia police spokesman said that arrests had been made but could not confirm how many.

“There were demonstrators acting aggressively and so there were arrests,” the spokesman said, adding that police acted to “restore order.”

Last week, clashes also broke out in Valencia during student demonstrations against government austerity measures.

On Monday, Spain’s opposition issued a statement demanding that the interior minister and chief of police explain the “heavy-handed repression” of last week’s demonstrations.

Battered by the global financial downturn, the Spanish economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008.

Analysts say Spain’s economy is expected to enter into a new recession in the first two quarters of 2012.
