Police escorting UK royal family convoy injures old woman

The royal family in Britain has again made it to the headlines as an old woman is injured by a police motorbike escorting their convoy.

The Sun newspaper said on Wednesday that the woman had been injured on Monday afternoon when a police motorbike was trying to clear traffic for the convoy of Prince William, the third in line to the British throne, and his wife, when they were travelling from London to Windsor.

Witnesses told the newspaper that the motorbike was on the wrong side of the road when the accident happened.

Police said the 80-year-old Irene Mayor was in a serious condition, suggesting she would survive the accident.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said it was investigating the incident which came as William and Kate Middleton were on their way to attend a commemorating ceremony for the royal family in Windsor.

A spokeswoman of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said the couple were “deeply concerned and saddened” by the accident, adding that they had sent a member of their staff to visit Mayor in hospital.

“Their Royal Highnesses have sent their very best regards to Irene and her family and will stay in touch throughout every stage of her recovery,” said the spokeswoman.

This is the second time this year that a member of the public in Britain is injured in an accident involving members of the royal family. Prince Philip, the husband of the reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II, injured a woman in January in a car crash near the royal family’s Sandringham Estate.

The crash sparked widespread outrage in Britain and finally forced the 98-year-old Philip to surrender his driver’s license.
