WHEN David Beer was found shot dead 18 years ago, he was at war with his neighbours and his wife. Police privately say they know the identity of his killer – but yesterday offered a $100,000 reward in a bid to solve the case.

On the morning of February 7, 1994, Beer was found leaning over in the seat of his tractor. He’d been there – shot in the chest – for about 12 hours, in clear view of anyone passing along Lockharts Gap Road in the Mitta Mitta Valley.

The real estate agent, investor and farmer was said by people in the valley to be a generous bloke, but also a stirrer. As friend Gordon Peters told The Sunday Age in 2005: ”He had a real love of rubbing people up the wrong way … You’d have to say a lot of it he’s brought on himself. Not that he deserved to be shot.”

According to police statements and a coroner’s inquest, Beer had for years been in conflict with his neighbours and his wife.

In May 1999, during the inquest, Coroner Kevin Mason heard that Beer was afraid of his wife Merrilyn – and often slept with a knife stuck in his bedroom door because he was worried she might turn up in the night.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
