Police use tear gas in Paris after protesters reportedly throw projectiles (VIDEO)

According to a Le Figaro correspondent, some 300 protesters had gathered in the Ménilmontant neighborhood in eastern Paris.

The protesters are shouting, “Macron Démission” (Macron’s resignation).

At least three bangs have been heard at the scene of the protest, a RIA Novosti correspondent on the spot reported, adding that police had deployed tear gas against the demonstrators.

The protest briefly broke out after polling stations closed Sunday and preliminary results showed that Emmanuel Macron had won the presidential election.

After the results of the first round of the elections on April 23, people on social media have been calling for a boycott of the second round under the hashtags #nimacronnilepen (neither Macron, nor Le Pen) and #SansMoiLe7Mai (May 7 without me).

In the meantime, protests took place in several cities across France. In the eastern city of Strasbourg, the rally against “fascists and capitalists” turned violent, with protesters throwing stones at police, FranceInfo reported

The crowd gathered near the headquarters of the En Marche! political movement, shouting “Macron Démission” (Macron Resignation). According to French media, at least 15 protesters were arrested and several people were reported injured.

At least 80 protesters gathered in southern city of Montpellier, according to Midi Libre newspaper.

Demonstrators have gathered in the southern city in Bordeaux, France Bleau newspaper said.

A demonstration also gathered in front of the City Hall in central Lyon.

“We promise to resist,” said banners held by demonstrators in the western city of Poitiers.
