President: Chabahar opens new chapter in Iran-India relations

Tehran, April 17, IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that Chabahar has opened a new chapter in Iran-India ties.

President Rouhani told Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday that with development of Chabahar port in Southern Iran, India will be linked to Central Asia, the Caucasus and Afghanistan and the giant project is a new chapter in mutal and multilateral cooperation among Tehran, New Delhi and the entire region.

He said the history of Iran-India cultural proximity and relations serve as a good basis for further expansion of bilateral relations in all areas of interest and expansion of the bilateral relations to the multilateral level will benefit the entire region.

Also referring to the potential of Iran and India, he said Tehran and India have many interests and can have extensive cooperation in the expansion of economic and political realtions and in regional and international issues.

The president said recent and future visits of Iranian and Indian senior officials will play an important role in the expansion of cooperation.

‘Economies of Iran and India are complementary to each other and Iran is able to be a reliable source of energy security for India’s developing economy.’

He said Iran and India have made good progress in scientific and technological fields and they should have common cooperation in the area as well.

He hoped that during visits of Iranian and Indian senior officials, the two sides will have consultations and cooperation in mutual and regional domains, especially in terrorism, a problem gripping the region.

He also referred to friendly and historical relations between Iranian and Indian nations, and said it is a big asset for the broadening of relations and cooperation between the two governments.

The Indian minister, for her part, said her country wants growing cooperation with Iran in all fields.

She said India, as an emerging economy needing energy, wants having relations on the win-win basis and the relations should be defined beyond the scope of commercial cooperation.

She also pointed to diversified grounds for investment and cooperation with Iran, and said India can be linked to the entire Central Asian and the Caucasus regions through Chabahar port and this will not only serve the two countries but the entire region.
