“Put The Brakes On US Empire”: Interview With Ajamu Baraka

Ajamu Baraka attended an historic meeting, with over 100 countries represented, in Caracas Venezuela in early March. Out of that meeting, the Caracas Declaration was published, which “reaffirm[ed] our solidarity and militant support of the Venezuelan people, the Bolivarian Revolution and its popular government, which is headed by Nicolas Maduro Moros.”

We discussed the current situation in Venezuela and why that solidarity by people in the United States is critical, even if we believe the process in Venezuela is not perfect. We also discussed Syria, North Korea and the Ukraine, and the serious threat of conflict with Russia and China.

Baraka placed the current discussion of gun control in the United States in the context of the need to make deeper connections between violence and weapons in the U.S. and U.S. imperialism around the world.

We also talked about the upcoming military parade in November called for by President Trump and the urgent necessity of mobilizing against the normalization of war and militarism in the U.S. As citizens of the largest empire in the history of the world, we are called to take action to put the brakes on imperialism. It is causing great harm to peoples around the world, to the health of the planet and to our communities at home. If we don’t act to stop it, then it will continue to escalate.
