Putin scores comfortable presidential elections victory

nsnbc : Vladimir Putin scored a solid and comfortable victory in Sunday’s presidential elections in the Russian Federation. With some 99 percent of the ballots counted on Monday, the results show that Putin was supported by more voters than any other candidate in the history of the Russian Federation’s presidential elections.

Vladimir Putin, Mar 2018, elections, Russia, MoscowWith 99.84 percent of the ballots counted Monday morning, the Russian federation’s Central Election Commission reported that Vladimir Putin had scored 76.66 percent of the votes with a voter turnout of 67.5 percent.

Putin had solid popular support. However, opponents complained about the lack of televised debates and equal access to Russia’s State-owned as well as increasingly State-dominated corporate media. Some critics say Putin won “comfortably”, knowing that he and the Kremlin could count on biased media coverage.

Putin would ignore such criticism while he told his supporters in an address on Manezh Square late Sunday, as the first results were being announced, “we are undeniably destined for success”.

Recognizing that there had been recorded incidents of ballot-stuffing and citizens being pressured to vote in compliance with their employers, the Central Election Commission stated that there were only half as many reported electoral violations this year as in the past presidential election in 2012.

Opponents of Putin alleged that voters in Sunday’s presidential election were being compelled to show up at polling stations in a Kremlin drive to ensure Putin’s likely win is not tarnished by a low turnout. Ivan Zhdanov, an aide to opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is barred from running in the race, said Navalny supporters monitoring the vote reported people being bussed to polling stations by their employers.

“We would call this the ‘shuttle bus election’,” Zhdanov told during a briefing. “Some organisations, some buses, are bringing massive amounts of people.” Kremlin officials privately acknowledge some voters are reluctant to show up and vote, even if they support Putin, because they believe his victory is already a foregone conclusion. The officials say though the vote will be fair.

Ella Pamfilova, head of the election commission has claimed that any fraud will be stamped out. She also claimed that those alleging the election was rigged were biased against Russia. However, Pamfilova did not explain how her claim would be consistent with the election commission’s other claim, that there were recorded incidents of ballot-stuffing and other irregularities, but just not as many as in 2012.

According to the official results published Monday, Putin received a total of 56.2 million votes, the most that any candidate has received in the seven presidential campaigns since the transition from Russia as a Soviet Republic to the Russian Federation. The last record was set by Dmitri Medvedev in 2008, who won the presidency with 52.5 million votes.  Newcomer Pavel Grudinin’s second-place showing with 11.79 percent marked the Communist Party’s worst results in the post-Soviet era.
