Putin’s envoy in an unexpected visit to Tehran

April 12 , The Iran Project – In a arare visit, Alexander Lavrentiev, Russian President Putin’s Envoy for Syria, arrived in Tehran on Tuesday (April 10).

The visiting Russian official held talks with senior advisor to Iranian foreign minister Hossein Jaberi Ansari and Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

Talking to Lavrentiev, Jaberi Ansari, condemned how the alleged chemical attack in Douma is being used against the Syrian government.

Jaberi Ansari also censured the instrumental use of the issue by US and Israeli regime who are laying blame on Syrian government for the alleged Saturday attack.

Lavrentiev, for his part, said situation is subject to everyday change in Syria, adding that positive and also concerning issues happen in these situations.

In a meantime, due to its confidentiality, Shamkhani-Lavrentiev ‘s meeting was not covered by media; but according to MNA, the newest developments about Syrian crisis, after Israeli planes launched a missile attack on a Syrian airbase early on Monday (April 9) were slated to be  reviewed during the meeting.

Earlier, President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with visiting Chairman of Russia’s State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said that Iran and Russia have strategic relations and must continue their cooperation until the full restoration of peace and security to the war-ravaged country.

Both Tehran and Moscow are giving Damascus a helping hand in its countrywide counter-terrorism battles. Iran has been offering military advisory assistance to the national Syrian army, while the Russian air force is providing air cover to its ground operations.

Also at a press conference in Damascus on Thursday (April 12) following Syria’s victory in Eastern Ghouta, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior aid to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, expressed hope for the Arab nation’s army to liberate Idlib Province, now a major militant bastion, and cleanse the country’s eastern regions of “occupying” US troops.

The US has long been accused of colluding with Daesh to provide safe passage and logistic support for the members of the Takfiri group in conflict zones.
