Queensland caucus elects Fraser as Bligh’s deputy

QUEENSLAND Treasurer Andrew Fraser has been elected Deputy Premier by the Labor caucus in an uncontested vote that Premier Anna Bligh has pitched as a renewal of the leadership team she will take to the next election.

Labelling Mr Fraser Australia’s “worst treasurer”, Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman moved to end speculation about who would be his deputy in a conservative government by anointing opposition parliamentary leader Jeff Seeney.

Since quitting as Brisbane’s lord mayor in March to lead the opposition from outside parliament, Mr Newman has refused to nominate a deputy, saying it would be a matter for the partyroom after the election, due by March.

He yesterday ended the speculation after Ms Bligh responded to his attacks on Mr Fraser by saying that at least voters had been told who would be deputy premier under a re-elected Labor government. “What we have is a solid, clear leadership team on the Labor side of politics going into the 2012 state election,” she said.

“Of course, on the other side of politics, we do not know who the deputy leader will be if there is a change of government.”

Mr Fraser, 35, is Queensland’s second-youngest treasurer behind “red” Ted Theodore in 1915. Paul Lucas announced on Thursday he was stepping down from the deputy’s position and would retire at the next election.

Mr Newman’s nomination of Mr Seeney, a former National Party MP from the rural seat of Callide, will cause friction in the LNP, with Warrego MP Howard Hobbs this year describing Mr Seeney as “the most hated man in the bush”.

Despite “the travails of recent years”, Mr Fraser said he was confident about the state’s direction and the unity of purpose the government shared.
