Responses to Brussels Airport and Metro Bombings

nsnbc : Politicians begin responding to the bombings in Brussels, Belgium, at 8.00 and 9:00 am Tuesday morning. Latest reports suggest that at least 17 were killed and about 106 were injured.

Federica Mgherini_Mar 2016_EU_Amman_JordanTurkish President R. Tayyip Erdogan, awkwardly, responded to Tuesday’s terror bombing, saying that bombs that explode in Ankara could also explode elsewhere, in European cities. Ironically, Turkey is along with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and certain NATO and EU member States one of the main sponsors of terrorism in the wider Middle East.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov commented that the foreign policy of certain EU member States has “blown up in the face of European politicians and made the Brussels attacks possible. Borisov said:

It is unfair and unjust that people we take care of deliver a stab at the very heart of Europe. We see in that the failure of the foreign policy of a whole series of European states. … Terrorists cannot be integrated. … I know we can fulfill it in the most convincing manner, because we share common values, morale and culture. I assure the friendly Belgian people and government that in this hard moment we’re together and they can rely on Bulgaria’s help and solidarity.”

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini cut short a press conference in Amman, Jordan. Mogherini broke out in tears when Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh conveyed his condolences. Judeh described the situation as “a very sad day” for Europe and compared the suffering caused by the attack with the suffering experienced in the Middle East. Ironically, Jordan has also been one of the main hosts, if not sponsors, or radical Islamists including the Libyan Brigade, Jabhat Al-Nusrah and other Al-Qaeda affiliates.

Russian President Vladimir Putin learned about the bombings during a meeting with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto. Putin conveyed his condolences to the injured and families of those killed in the attacks, saying:

“We have met to talk about bilateral relations first of all. But in view of the current tragic events in Belgium I, certainly, should begin with the words of condolences to the injured and families of the killed. We have many times discussed problems of combating terrorism. Of course, only by joint efforts it is possible to fight it.”

Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto, for his part, said that he is grieving together with the Belgian people and agreed that international terrorism only can be defeated by “pooling efforts”.
