Russia against Iran unilateral sanctions

“Our stance regarding unilateral sanctions is clear. We are opposed to any unilateral sanctions,” Lavrov said during a press conference with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran on Wednesday.

“Unilateral sanctions by others will never have a positive and constructive outcome,” he added.

Lavrov made the comment ahead of scheduled talks between Iran and the P5+1 group — the US, Britain, Russia, France, and China plus Germany — in Moscow next week.

Last month, the US Senate approved a bill to extend sanctions against countries or companies that have dealings with the National Iranian Oil Company and the National Iranian Tanker Company, another attempt to restrict Iran from selling its crude oil abroad.

Meanwhile, Lavrov and Salehi said they hold similar views regarding the situation in Syria.

The Russian foreign minister accused the United States of sending weapons to armed groups in Syria.

“They are providing arms and weapons to the Syrian opposition that can be used in fighting against the Damascus government,” Lavrov said.

He also added that his country will not accept a Libya-style military intervention in Syria.

Moscow is set to invite around 15 countries, including Iran, for an international meeting on Syria, focusing on the implementation of a peace plan brokered by UN-Arab League joint envoy Kofi Annan.
