Russian Wagner Group merceneary Yury Ebel reported killed in Syria

nsnbc : Yury Ebel, another Russian mercenary from the Wagner Group has been killed in Syria. Although mercenaries are banned under Russian law – a law that provides plausible deniability – Yury was not only deployed in Syria but also with Russia’s “little green men” in Ukraine.

The Wagner Group has also been linked to the so-called “little green men”. Russian-speaking soldiers in uniforms without insignia, who in 2014, all the sudden, appeared out of thin air in Crimea and in eastern Ukraine’s rebelling Donbass region.

It took a while before the information about the death of Yury Ebel became publicly known. The Russian “alleged non-mercenary” a.k.a. “a Russian-speaking little green man” died along with18 others during shelling in Syria on October 20. Yury Ebel was from the Russian satellite Republic of Moldova.

Ebel joined Wagner — named after the nom de guerre of its founder Dmitry Utkin — after completing his draft service in the Russian army, a friend told the RBC business portal. It was his third tour of duty in Syria, she said.

Ebel is survived by his wife and eight-month-old son, RBC reported. The independent investigative group Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) said photos from Ebel’s social media account indicate that he was drafted into the army in 2012.

The private served in a Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) Special Forces brigade. He was also described as deployed in a “peace-keeping unit” in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. Several photos on his account were geotagged in Rostov Region near the Ukrainian border in the autumn of 2014.

His death brings the number of Wagner contractors who have died fighting in Syria to 8, according to CIT. The Russian Defense Ministry does not acknowledge contractors’ in the war or their deaths. Very much like it also is with the United States, Russia also uses “contractors” to “keep official casualty numbers politically acceptable” as well as for reasons of “plausible deniability” in sensitive operations – like sending little green men to Crimea – while claiming Russia didn’t invade.

At least 36 Russian servicemen have died since Moscow launched its campaign in Syria in late September 2015, according to a tally by Kommersant based on official figures, other news agencies report about 40 death, a claim which the Russian Defense Ministry denies.
