San Francisco Is About To Ban The Sale Of Fur From All Stores

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, times are changing. This is just one example out of many that show how raising awareness, and changing our actions, the unjust and cruel practices that are happening in our current society can and will stop.

The entire city of San Francisco is about to ban the sale of fur from all stores in the city. As growing awareness continues to be raised about the fur trade industry and the inhumane treatment of animals in order to get it, San Francisco is taking a powerful stand, and once again leading the nation towards more ethical choices. This sends a powerful message to the rest of the world – if there is something that you don’t want to see happening, you can simply opt out. For a big city to make this decision, it’s very inspiring for other cities across the globe to follow suit and take action against similar injustices. We have complete power to do something about it. Hats off to you, city of San Francisco!

Supervisor Katy Tang introduced the legislation in December of last year. The ban of the sale of fur will apply to all retailers throughout the entire city with the exception of second-hand stores, which will be permitted to sell only used furs provided they do not come from endangered species. Tang is a major animal rights activist and also passed a law that banned the sale of animals in pet shops, she has also been a part of action steps towards prohibiting the use of wild animals for entertainment.

A similar legislation in regards to the sale of fur was proposed in Berkeley and West Hollywood, which is right in the center of the place you might expect to find the most fur. Los Angeles became the first city ever to ban fur in 2013.

It’s really only a matter of time before the rest of the nation follows suit and then more countries follow. We all know it won’t be long before Canada takes similar action, and then on to the rest of the globe.

Why The Ban?

When an estimated 6.5 million foxes and 60 million minks are farmed for the sole purpose of their fur worldwide every year, as well as countless rabbits, it brings the total of number of animals who are bred specifically for their skin above one billion – and for what? Is it really worth it? We torture animals and have them suffer for their entire short lives just to be slaughtered and skinned… in the name of fashion? Surely, we can think of fashion that doesn’t involve cruelty, suffering and death?

Major fashion brands such as Armani, Gucci, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, BCBG, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren, have already banned the use of fur from their companies. Luckily, San Francisco along with these brands, will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the use of fur as a whole in the fashion industry.

The Power Of The People

Would these major designers have stopped using fur had the customers stopped purchasing it? This is difficult to say for sure, but it isn’t very likely. The consumer, the person alone has all the power. If you don’t like something, the answer is simple, DO NOT SUPPORT IT. This is truly a prime example of what a small group of committed people can accomplish if they come together and stand up for what they believe in.

This applies to every aspect of our lives, by raising awareness, putting your money where your mouth is and being the change you wish to see – this is exactly how we can change the world!
