Saudi Arabia set to execute 14 for exercising fundamental human rights

nsnbc : Saudi Arabia is set to execute 14 prisoners, including prisoners who were sentenced for protesting during the 2011 – 12 Arab Spring. The prisoners have been transferred from Dammam to the capital Riyadh on July 15, indicating that an execution is imminent since upholding death sentences at the Saudi Supreme Court, usually, is a mere formality.

Saudi Arabia execution (Archives)Several of those who were transferred were sentenced to death as part of a mass death sentence of 14 individuals in June 2016. Among those whose names have been confirmed are Munir Al-Adam, Abdullah Al-Turaif, Abdullah Al-Sareeh, and Mujaba Al-Suwaiket.

Munir Al-Adam is a disabled prisoner who was arrested in connection with his participation in the so-called “Arab Spring” protests that swept across much of North Africa and the Arab World in 2011 – 12. Two months ago a special appeals court upheld his sentence – behind closed doors. About ten days ago, the European – Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) stressed that he, according to reports, had been taken into solitary confinement whilst in Dammam prison.

Isolating convicts prior to executions is also common practice in the country, noted the ESOHR. Munir was initially arrested in February 2012. Munir, his defense lawyer and rights organizations stressed that he was tortured during his detention and beaten so hard that he lost his remaining hearing in one ear. His subsequent trial in the criminal court in Riyadh was described as described as unfair, among others, because the court fully accepted his confession even though it – allegedly – was obtained under torture. The 14 have been sentenced on charges including inciting armed rebellion against the ruler, inciting chaos, using Molotov cocktails, and shooting security personnel.

The ESOHR stressed that prisoners such as “Munir Al-Adam are being punished for exercising their fundamental human rights such as freedom of assembly”. The human rights NGO also stresses that “Saudi Arabia consistently fails to abide by the strict criteria which safeguard substantive and procedural requirements with relation to the death penalty.” Earlier in July 2017 4 other prisoners were executed, including protesters such as Amjad Al-Moebid and Yussuf Al-Mushaaykhuss.
