In a shocking move, the California Coastal Commission banned SeaWorld in San Diego, California, from breeding orcas in captivity until they obtain a larger space for the 11 killer whales they already have.

This decisions comes after months of debates over whether or not SeaWorld is bound to the CCC’s rulings because of the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 which empowers the commission to have authority over the management of care for captive orcas.

Currently, SeaWorld is seeking to overturn their ban on breeding orcas; however they have not confirmed that they are preparing litigation against the CCC.

SeaWorld is owned by Sea World Entertainment (SWE) who has been losing a battle with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for some time now despite their new advertising campaign to repair their “tarnished” reputation after accusations of being cruel to their animals has hurt revenue.

The entertainment company has made a $10 million investment in researching orcas in the wild as a part of their public relations scheme to overcome the devastating effects of the 2013 documentary Blackfish which highlighted SWE’s unbecoming treatment of their killer whales.

PETA has accused SWE of animal cruelty:

  • 40 feet deep tanks, orcas are subjected to repeated sunburns which is covered up with black zinc oxide
  • Orcas are taken from the wild and brought to Sea World
  • Famed Shamu’s mother was harpooned during her capture in 1965
  • Captive orcas lose an estimated 20 – 30 years on average; only living for 9 years in captivity
  • Collapsed dorsal fins indicate unhealthy orcas
  • Confined living spaces for whales and dolphins

To prove PETA’s point, John Hargrove, former trainer for SWE wrote a tell-all book about what he experienced at the park and how the animals are treated.

Hargrove told the press : “As I became higher-ranked, I saw the devastating effects of captivity on these whales and it just really became a moral and ethical issue. When you first start to see it, you first try to say, ‘OK, well, I love these animals; I’m going to take care of them.’ … You think, ‘I can change things.’ And then all these things, of course, never improve and then you start … seeing mothers separated from their calves; you start seeing trainers being killed, and then they blame [the trainers] for their own deaths.”
