Senior health official reverses car into man, lightly injuring him

The deputy director-general of the Health Ministry was involved in a car accident that lightly injured a pedestrian on Wednesday morning.

According to the Ynet news site, Itamar Grotto said he did not see the man behind his car as he was reversing the vehicle near his home in the central city of Hod Hasharon.

There was no statement from police on the matter.

Medics from the Magen David Adom emergency service said the injured pedestrian was conscious when they arrived at the scene and that he received treatment for abdominal injuries.

The man was taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, where he was in stable condition and underwent tests.

The incident was not the first time Grotto hit the headlines for the wrong reasons — in June the Health Ministry’s second-in-command came under fire for granting Israeli-Cypriot billionaire Teddy Sagi’s request to be exempted from self-quarantine upon arriving in Israel. Sagi reportedly then attended a rooftop party in Tel Aviv that apparently violated the Health Ministry’s guidelines on large gatherings at that time.

Grotto apologized for that incident.
