Senior UAE official calls for international monitoring to resolve Persian Gulf row

International monitoring is needed to resolve the diplomatic crisis between the Persian Gulf states and Qatar, which emerged a month ago over Doha’s alleged support for terrorism, Gargash said in prepared remarks to be delivered later on Monday.

“We need a regional solution and international monitoring…. We need to be certain that Qatar, a state with $300 billion in reserves, is no longer an official or unofficial sponsor of terrorist causes,” Gargash is expected to say in his speech in London, as quoted by the Middle East’s newspaper The National.

Gargash welcomed the US-Qatari memorandum to disrupt financing of terrorist organizations, signed last week, and described it as a positive sign.

In June, Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE severed diplomatic ties with Qatar over its alleged terror funding. The Persian Gulf states put forth 13 demands to Qatar, including lessening the level of relations with Iran, the halt of terror funding, and non-interference in the internal affairs of the Arab countries. Qatar rejected the demands regarding them as neither acceptable nor based on evidence.
