A total of Six Greek-Australians ranked among Business News Australia‘s Top 100 Young Entrepreneurs list for the year of 2021.
Although 2021 proved another difficult year for businesses across the world after dealing with lockdowns, restrictions, and variants, many young entrepreneurs took the challenges of the pandemic as an opportunity to grow their own businesses.
Many of these young entrepreneurs were able to flourish this past year, despite the immense odds stacked against them.
Smart business owners understood the shifting habits of consumers in the wake of the pandemic, and were able to adapt to the new post-Covid world, whether it be by shifting to e-commerce and online shopping or developing new ways to make working from home more efficient.
The young entrepreneurs featured on Business News Australia‘s list were able to defy the odds by generating nearly $6 billion in revenue this past year. The top 10 businesses listed produced the largest share of the figure, with $4 billion in revenue.
Greek-Australian entrepreneurs were well represented on the list, with six businesses headed by Greek-Australians included amongst the rankings.
Greek-Australian entrepreneurs defied pandemic odds in 2021
Chris Anastasi and Nathaniel Anthony rank at number 18 with their multi-million dollar fitness enterprise called Muscle Nation. The pair’s business, which began five years ago in a spare bedroom in Anthony’s grandmother’s house, focuses on supplements, active wear, and other fitness and nutrition-related products. Their popular protein bars can be found at supermarkets across Australia.
Ranking at 42, the next Greek entrepreneurs on the list are Michael Christidis and Nicolas Greco, who along with Christian Serrao, Thomas Caw, and Filippo Palermo, co-founded the events business known as the “Untitled Group.”
The Untitled Group, which was known for organizing some of Australia’s most famous and beloved music festivals and events, had the odds stacked against it in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a massive blow to the events industry, countless concerts, events, and festivals were cancelled due to the pandemic. Untitled Group, however, pivoted to online events and live streams, started an artist agency, and purchased The Emerson nightclub in South Yarra in 2021.
Mad Paws’ CEos Alexis Soulopulos, Justus Hammer, and Jan Pacas sit at 55 on the rankings of Australia’s top young entrepreneurs. Since 2014, the businessmen have excelled at predicting trends in the pet services industry. Mad Paws offers users an online marketplace for services like pet sitting and dog walking, and also allows them to purchase essentials like pet food and insurance with ease.
Coming in at 90 on the list, Greek-Australian entrepreneur Nicholas Mitrosillis, the founder of Greek food chain The Yiros Shop, is looking to create the largest Greek food franchise in Australia with his authentic souvlaki business.
The Yiros Shop found great success in Southeast Queensland, and Mitrosillis will be launching more stores and drive-thrus across the country in 2022.
Although there are many options for Greek food in Australia, which is home to a vibrant Greek diaspora community, The Yiros Shop is one of the only Greek food drive-thru options in the country.
Finally, at number 91, is Harry Karefilakis, the founder of electrcal contractor business Kare Group. In 2021, he founded All Steel Designs, which offers top-of-the-line internal steel doors and front doors for homes.
