Solar panels are safety risk in floods

Residents living in flood-prone areas of NSW are being warned about the risk of electrocution from solar panels.

Heavy flooding deluged the ACT and large tracts of southern NSW on Tuesday, and more falls are expected in coming days over more of the state.

NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts says people should be very cautious when re-entering flood-affected homes fitted with solar panels.

“Solar panels can pose an electrocution risk even when the power has been switched off at the mains,” he said.

“Solar panels can continue to generate electricity during daylight hours.”

Residents in the southern NSW towns of Cooma and Queanbeyan are already preparing for heavy flooding, with the weather bureau expecting heavy rains to spread to the Illawarra, South Coast and Central West Slopes overnight and into Wednesday.

Tibooburra, Broken Hill, Griffith, Ivanhoe, Cowra, Goulburn, Wollongong, Nowra and Batemans Bay are also forecast to be deluged.
