Son denies murdering father

A 21-year-old man pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court yesterday to the murder of his father whom he allegedly stabbed at his father’s 42nd birthday party.

Ronald Shiels, from Windang, on the the south coast, admitted stabbing his father in the head with a kitchen knife during an altercation in Leumeah, near Fairfield, after a lot of alcohol had been consumed, Crown prosecutor Brad Hughes said.

He was addressing acting Justice Graham Barr, who is hearing the case without a jury.

He said an issue in the case would be whether Mr Shiels, who has a history of schizophrenia and has been treated for it, had impaired responsibility caused by an abnormality of the mind, triggered by substance abuse and alcohol.

Mr Shiels, who is represented by Jason Watts, offered to plead guilty to manslaughter but that has not been accepted by the Crown.
