South Korea jails dementia patient

In South Korea, an elderly man suffering from dementia has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for starting a deadly fire at a hospital for elderly people.

On Friday, South Korea’s Gwangju District Court handed down the harsh sentence to the 81-year-old man identified only by the surname Kim, saying he was convicted of arson and manslaughter for starting a fire that caused the death of 22 people.

The spokesman of the court, Hahn Ji-Hyeong, claimed that Kim “was not so impaired” and was able to realize the consequences of his actions.

Kim started a fire on the second floor of the hospital for the elderly in the southern Janseong County on May 27. About 70 elderly patients, most being bed-ridden, were at the hospital at the time of the fire.

Most of the victims died as a result of smoke inhalation.

Kim denied responsibility for the incident until the court presented security footage showing him going into a storage room where the fire had started.

Investigation into the incident showed that the hospital lacked enough sprinklers installed. The facility also did not have enough night duty employees at the time.

This comes months after South Korea announced tightened safety regulations for senior facilities, requiring all hospitals for the elderly to have sprinklers by the next three years.
