Prominently displayed on the US State Department’s US Embassy & Consulates in the UK website is an advertisement for Donald Trump’s for-profit resort, Mar-a-Lago.

According to a blog post from the US embassy in the UK, frequent visits by Trump to his “Winter White House” is a good thing.

The post reads in part: “Trump’s Florida estate has become as well known as the president frequently travels there…Trump is not the first president to have access to Mar-a-Lago as a Florida retreat, but he is the first one to use it. Trump is belatedly fulfilling the dreams of Mar-a-Lago’s original owner and designer.”

This post was first displayed on the US State Department’s ShareAmerica platform.

ShareAmerica released a statement earlier this month that resembles an advertisement for Trump’s club.

The statement reads in part: “Upon her death in 1973, [Marjorie Merriweather Post] willed the estate to the U.S. government, intending it to be used as a winter White House for the U.S. president to entertain visiting foreign dignitaries. Her plan didn’t work, however. Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter never used the property. And in 1981 the government returned the estate to the Post Foundation because it was costing too much money to maintain.”

It goes on to state: “That opened the way for Trump, a real-estate magnate, to purchase the property in 1985. When he acquired the house, Trump also bought the decorations and furnishings that Post had collected over the years, preserving Mar-a-Lago’s style and taste. … Post’s dream of a winter White House came true with Trump’s election in 2016. Trump regularly works out of the house he maintains at Mar-a-Lago and uses the club to host foreign dignitaries.”

Congressman Mark Takano and Senator Ron Wyden took to Twitter to voice their disdain for the State Department’s blatant promotion of Mar-a-Lago.

Norm Eisen, a fellow at the Brookings Institute and former US ambassador under the Obama administration, tweeted: “This appears 2B violation of 5 CFR 2635.502.”

According to 5 CFR 2635.502, the US Embassy’s promotion of Mar-a-Lago violates the first sentence in Section 2635.502 which reads: “Where an employee knows that a particular matter involving specific parties is likely to have a direct and predictable effect on the financial interest of a member of his household, or knows that a person with whom he has a covered relationship is or represents a party to such matter, and where the employee determines that the circumstances would cause a reasonable person with knowledge of the relevant facts to question his impartiality in the matter, the employee should not participate in the matter unless he has informed the agency designee of the appearance problem and received authorization from the agency designee.”
