Striking images from the last week of Gaza’s Great March of Return

Over the last two weeks Palestinians in Gaza have assembled in mass along the border with Israel for the “Great March of Return,” protesting against their displacement and the siege over the Strip. Demonstrators built a tent village that they will keep erected until mid-May. The encampment has become a focal point for political speeches, children playing, even a somber marking of a birthday. Teenager Hussein Madi was killed on his 14th birthday last Friday by Israeli forces. Yesterday his family lit candles in memorial near the location where he was fatally wounded.

Since demonstrations began late last month Israeli forces have killed 30 Palestinians, including one journalist, and injured at least 2860, according to Gaza’s ministry of health.
