Syrian Army kills militant commander

The leader of Liwa al-Tawhid militant group, Yusef al-Jader, also known as Abu Furat, was killed during fighting to take control of Muslimiyeh military academy just north of Aleppo on Saturday, the group said in a statement.

He was also reportedly involved in heavy fighting in Aleppo’s Salaheddin and Saif al-Dawlah neighborhoods, which have been the scene of some of the fiercest clashes over the past few months.

However, the fighting ended when the Syrian army drove foreign-backed insurgents out of the city. An undisclosed number of militants have also been killed during the clashes.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of militants are foreign nationals.

Damascus says certain Western states, especially the United States, and their regional allies are fueling the unrest.
