Syrian Democratic Forces deny Queer Liberation Army is part of SDF, YPG or YPJ

nsnbc : Mustafa Bali, the director of the Syrian Democratic Forces’ media center, on Tuesday, denied the existence of a LGBT military unit among SDF forces fighting in Raqqa.  However, a so-called Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army (TQILA) exists as part of the anarchist International Revolutionary People’s Guerrilla Forces (IRPGF).

SDF media spokesman Mustafa Bali commented on the issue on Tuesday, saying:

“Social Media sites today, reported on the formation of a battalion of homosexuals within the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). … We in the Syrian Democratic Forces, while emphasizing our deep respect for human rights, including the rights of homosexuals, we deny the formation of such a battalion within the framework of our forces, and we consider this news to be untrue.”

The issue arose on Monday, when a group of international volunteers fighting alongside Kurdish forces in Syria announced the formation of an LGBT unit under the name of Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army a.k.a. TQILA.

The newly-formed unit is part of the at least nominally anarchist International Revolutionary People’s Guerrilla Forces (IRPGF).

TQILA spokesman Heval Rojhilat told reporters that many comrades were exited and happy to see that TQILA has brought a rainbow flag.

He added that part of the YPGs and YPJ’s ideological training includes the concept of “Jineloji” which speaks about gender as a social construct and about sexuality in “radical ways”.

Rojhilat added that the TQILA is the fourth major component of the IRPGF along with the MLKP, BÖG and TIKKO, all of which have guerrilla forces in Rojava, Bashur, Bakur, as well as Turkey. However, he said he could not say anything about their numbers “for security reasons”.

The SDF however, denies that the organization is affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the People’s Protection Units (YPG), or the Women’s protection Units (YPJ).
