Israeli Knesset allows jailing little Palestinian children

Days of Palestine, Jerusalem -Israeli occupation Knesset approved early this week a bill that allows jailing Palestinian children as young as 12 years old.

Israeli lawmakers voted 64 in favour and 22 against the amendment to the Youth Law sponsored by Likud MK Anat Berko.

The bill, which says the imprisonment of little children is based on committing terror acts, was submitted by the Israeli ministries of justice and social welfare in cooperation with the private bill of Berko.

According to the bill, young Palestinians who are accused of involvement in “acts of terror” would be held in a youth facility until the age of 14 and then transferred to prison.

Prison sentences could also be imposed on children under 14 if they are convicted of murder, attempted murder or manslaughter.

Israeli occupation has its own definition of terror acts, for example, a Palestinian child throwing an armoured military vehicle that stormed his village and its personnel kidnapped his father is considered an attempted murder.

Therefore, the child must be prosecuted in a military court and had to be sentenced to spend his life in prison, including a couple of years in solitary confinement.

Arab members of the Knesset criticised the bill saying it is an attempt to take one section of the Youth Law, which deals with minors in the context of criminal law and restrict it to terror.

The criticism stems from the lack of equal conduct between Palestinian youth and their Israeli counterparts.

Arab MKs said the bill is only part of the continued incitement against the Palestinian public.
