Liverpool cop killed, two others injured

An off-duty police officer has been killed and two of his colleagues injured when an armed man opened fire on them in the center of England’s northwestern city of Liverpool.

The assault took place at around 0315 GMT on Friday near the Aloha bar on Colquitt Street of the city, situated 354 kilometers (220 miles) northwest of the capital, London.

Merseyside police constable Neil Doyle, who was based at the Eaton Road police station, and two other off-duty officers suffered gunshot wounds.

Police officers were called to the area after reports of an assault. The scene has been cordoned off.

The three injured police officers were taken to hospital, where the 36-year-old Doyle died a short while later.

A police spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said both of the injured officers have been discharged from hospital. One suffered a fractured cheekbone, and another “a less serious facial injury.”

A postmortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of Doyle’s death.

Meanwhile, a murder investigation has been launched into the deadly incident.

“The investigation is still in its very early stages and officers are trying to establish what happened,” a Merseyside police spokesman said.
