The Dark Arts of Subversion

As U.S President Harry Truman surmised, ‘if you can’t stand the heat then get out of the kitchen.’ This sage maxim comes to mind when I think of the links between political activism and subversion. Just as colds and other viruses are part of the human condition, subversion is part of ideal-activism.

There is no cure for subversion; even those who lead blameless lives will be scarred by sedition. Inoculation and awareness are preventative medicine rather than the cure.

A subversive is the business rival who denigrates your business, it is your rival in love who implies you have a wandering eye, and it is the work colleague who elevates himself at your expense. Subversion is the honey-trap that gets you into bed with the wrong person. It is life, get over it. If politically or issue-active, then you are sure to come across the dreaded S virus.

In itself subversion is not a problem. With a few precautions the effects can be reduced ~ or turned to your advantage. Why not be a subversive and subvert your enemies? It is great fun.

If you are a person of influence the aim of subversion is to undermine your credibility. This usually takes the form of insinuation as to your qualifications or it may be the spreading of false rumours about you. Very likely it will be implied that you have ulterior motives, are suspiciously connected, in it to make a fast buck, or leading a double life.

If you need lessons in subversion simply pick up your remote or your newspaper; you will be sand-blasted with subversion. This will normally be directed at your country’s perceived enemies.

If you are an activist there will be attempts made to corrode your confidence in your cause, your leaders or fellow members. Another ploy is for someone bent on doing you harm to first ingratiate themselves with you. This will falsely add to their credibility before the serious business of undermining you begins.

If you are a writer then watch out for the most common trick; the 10-second torpedoes. This is to ‘innocently’ question your sources. Let us take a prosaic example: You pen a super essay in which you quote a comment made by U.S President Richard Nixon. It takes a few seconds for a spoiler to write, ‘have you a source for that quote?’ It takes the writer days to find it. If unable or unwilling to do the research needed, the target’s apparent inability to answer makes some question his truthfulness. The subversive can’t lose.

At the barricades, so to speak, those who wish to subvert you will seek to otherwise inspire you to breaking the law. If you are so foolish to do so you will find the police waiting for you. It happens and it is all part of the subversive’s armoury.

Please do not allow this to discourage you from political activism. Knowing the dangers makes you safer; your awareness undermines those who are trying to undermine you. If you are destined for a life of protest then get hold of a copy of the dissident’s manual, Europe Arise. Make copies available to your members. Apart from scores of quotations, essays and images that make you ultra-proud of your ethnic European blood you will find a useful guide to help you become an expert street-wise activist.
