They Must Be Belgians – Scouts Crash into Lamppost, Blindfolded

nsnbc : A Belgian scout leader drove his car with nine “blindfolded” boy and girl scouts into a lamppost. The incident brings to mind the time when Belgium was the only European country where one did not have to pass a test to “buy” a license and people joked about bad drivers, saying “they must be Belgian”.

A Crash Course in Belgian Driving Skills?

The accident on Tuesday was condemned by the Belgian association for scouts who noted that “there’s no way to explain away the accident”. No blindfold there. The crash happened when a 21-year-old scout leader lost control of the car in Korbeek-Dijle.

The driver was not blindfolded; But seriously, several of his blindfolded passengers were injured and one of them had to be taken to a hospital. The scout association stressed that driving around with 10 persons in in the car put the drivers and the passengers lives at risk. Moreover, the association stressed that the driver recently had been reminded about driving regulations.

The group took on a trip with the intention to drop the blindfolded scouts off at a location that was unknown to them. Taking off the blindfolds, they probably quickly recognized that the location was a lamppost, even though that destination hadn’t been part of the planned exercise.

One of the blindfolded scouts was on the “death seat”, four were on the back seat and four were sitting in the boot. Naturally, there were not enough seat belts for ten persons in the vehicle. Especially not in the boot.

Driving with a number of persons that exceeds the number of persons a vehicle has been approved for is illegal, even in Belgium. The driver risks a prison sentence of up to one year and a 6,000 euro fine.

The charges and the possible sentence may depend on the age of the police, prosecutor or judge who are handling the case. Those who are old enough to remember that it, until 1977, was possible to buy a driver’s license without having to pass any kind of test could, arguably, be more lenient. “Real Belgians” as older fellow Europeans remember them.

The great advantage that Belgian drivers on European highways had, at least until the mid-1980s, was that everybody went out of his way to get out of their way when a car with white Belgian license plates with red letters and numbers came by. But lampposts? Belgium must have had lampposts before 1977.
