Thousands call for governor’s resignation in Puerto Rico

Thousands of people rallied in Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan, as public pressure mounts on Governor Ricardo Rossello to resign in the wake of offensive messages from a private group chat being leaked to the public.

Protesters crowded the streets playing tambourines and banging on pots and pan, with many carrying signs reading “Ricky quit.”

Protests were held over the last week, after nearly 900 pages of private chats between Rosello and members of his inner circle were leaked. The exchanges exposed misogynistic, homophobic and profane messages, but they also contained threats against political opponents. Some comments also mocked victims of Hurricane Maria and disabled people, with a number of cabinet members and top aides involved in the scandal.

Activists on the streets also called for a change in the current leadership, blaming the governor for having caused corruption in the US territory and for being incapable of ruling.

On Friday, House Speaker Carlos Mendez announced he set up a committee to determine whether Rossello was involved in illegal activity in the leaked conversations.

Rossello has apologized for the messages, saying they were “inappropriate” but not “illegal.” On Friday he sent tweets showing him carrying on with business as usual.
