Students behave badly: venomously, criminally!

Vindictive students sometimes act on their desire to “get even” with teachers and administrators who they think deserve their wrath.  Following are three such cases that occurred in February, 2016:

In Deltona, FL, three 12-year-old girls spiked a teacher’s soda with crushed red-pepper flakes.  The teacher reported that when she took the first sip of the contaminated drink she began to choke, experience shortness of breath and feel a burning sensation in her throat.  She quickly realized that something was wrong and upon investigation discovered residue of red pepper in the beverage.  The teacher indicated that she continued to suffer discomfort in her throat and pain in her stomach throughout the day and into the evening.

This is how the malicious attack happened: A few days earlier, the teacher had sent this particular student to the principal’s office for dumping glue into another student’s backpack and on suspicion of stealing a laptop computer.  This disciplinary action enraged the student, and so she recruited two of her friends to assist her in getting revenge.  The three of them plotted a scheme to “poison” the teacher’s drink with red pepper, which they successfully carried out.  The three were subsequently charged with feloniously tampering with consumer products and poisoning food or water

In a second case, a 16-year-old male student at Career and Technology Center of Union County, SC, circulated nude images of a teacher throughout the school and on social media.  The student had clandestinely transferred the nude snapshots from the teacher’s cell phone to his cell phone.  Reportedly, at the end of the class period, the student told the teacher, “Your day of reckoning is coming”. He then proceeded to widely exhibit and distribute the nude photos. The teacher later found four 5” x 7” hard copies of her nude selfie in her mailbox.

The student was arrested and charged with one count of violating SC’s computer crime act in the second degree and one count of aggravated voyeurism.

Revenge also seems to be the motivation in our third case: The triggering event in this instance was the suspension of two boys from school for drug-related misbehavior, in Payette, Idaho.  Violently angry, these two youth convinced two others to join with them in torching the suspending-principal’s house.  Fortunately, the principal and his family escaped unharmed.  However, the house and three cars were burned beyond repair.  All of the boys were under 18 years of age: one was a middle schooler and three were in high school.

All four perpetrators were apprehended and charged with conspiracy to commit arson; all are subject to be tried as adults.  Two of them face first-degree arson charges, for which they could receive a sentence of life in prison.
