According to recent reports , former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and other Trump campaign associates had at least 18 phone calls with Russian officials during last year’s election cycle.
Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak took an estimated 6 (previously unknown) calls from Flynn. Those conversations became more frequent after November 8th, creating a back channel between Putin and Trump. They began in April of 2016.
Talks during the campaign centered on “a pragmatic, business-style approach and stressed to Trump associates that they could make deals by focusing on common economic and other interests and leaving contentious issues aside.”
Beyond the phone calls, emails and text messages between Kislyak and Trump’s campaign advisers. This meant the 2 could speak through their consorts without tipping off US intelligence agencies.
For example, Viktor Medvedchuk, a close confidant of Putin (who is godfather to Medvedchuck’s daughter) is suspected of speaking with Trump’s campaign associates on behalf of Putin.
Undisclosed communications between Trump’s campaign and Russian officials “form part of the record now being reviewed by FBI and congressional investigators probing Russian interference in the US presidential election and contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russia.”
This revelation is being paired with a New York Times report stating that the Trump administration knew Flynn was under FBI investigation for lying about being a paid lobbyist for Turkey and hired him as National Security Adviser anyway.
In fact, Donald McGahn, White House counsel, was told on January 4th that the FBI was looking into Flynn and his propaganda work for Turkey. Now a grand jury in Virginia has issued subpoenas to Flynn’s business associates, demanding records pertaining to Flynn.
Along with the injury, the House Oversight Committee has requested records of Flynn’s trip to Russia in 2015 for which he was paid to speak at an event hosted by RT (the Kremlin-funded media outlet). Flynn was seated next to Putin during the dinner.
This new information compounds the details of the memo written by former FBI director James Comey – revealing that Trump told him to “shut down” the investigation into Flynn.
Comey wrote about a February 14th meeting in the Oval Office with Trump. He was joined by Mike Pence and Jeff Sessions.
Trump asked everyone to leave except for Comey. He then went on to tell Comey: “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
Trump went on to assert Flynn had done nothing wrong.
This memo is one piece of a larger paper trail Comey left behind in order to document what he considered to be “improper efforts to influence a continuing investigation” by Trump. The trove of memos includes notes on every phone call and meeting with Trump.
Ironically it was Trump that threatened Comey last week with the notion that he had “tapes” of their conversations that he might release to the public.

Speaking with NBC News, Trump said he spoke with Comey during a dinner the former FBI director initiated. Trump claimed Comey told him during that dinner that he was not under investigation by the FBI.
However, it was the White House that requested that dinner with Comey.
In addition, Comey did not state that Trump was not under FBI investigation; but rather refused to pledge loyalty to Trump when asked to do so. Comey told Trump he would be honest but would not pledge loyalty.
Former and current FBI sources relayed that “the January dinner meeting between the two men … was requested by the White House. And the former senior FBI official says Comey would never have told the president he was not under investigation.”
The Comey firing has had several narrative re-writes. Initially the White House claimed it was deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein’s recommendation that caused the firing, but Trump provided a new plot twist during his interview with Lester Holt when he asserted: “I was going to fire regardless of recommendation.”
The White House first stood behind Rosenstein’s recommendation that because of Comey’s handling of the Clinton email debacle was the reason for termination, but Trump told Holt that Russia was the reason for Comey leaving the FBI.
Trump told Holt: “When I decided to [fire Comey], I said to myself, I said you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story.”
