“Trump Memo”—Media Technique Revealed

The “Trump Memo” furor is an example of how the controlled media manufactures fake news by using a devious technique known as “leading with rebuttal”— whereby defamatory, unproved, and unprovable allegations can be publicized without fear of legal action, a former journalist with one of the large media corporations has revealed.

Speaking to the New Observer in the wake of the latest controlled media publicity being given to a completely anonymous, 35-page, error-littered, MS Word document containing the most fantastic, lurid, and preposterous allegations against Donald Trump, the former journalist said that “journalistic” technique provides a “legal cover under which any outrageous claim can be presented as news.

“It works as follows,” the journalist said. “Often the media masters are confronted with an unprovable allegation against their chosen target which cannot be published without facing instant, and certain legal action.

“The latest ‘Trump memo’ is a case in point. This document offers not even the tiniest shred of evidence, and if the controlled media had to run the obvious outrageous lies it contains, they would instantly be hit with a defamation case they would be guaranteed of losing.

“However, the technique they use to avoid legal responsibility for publicizing the allegations is to employ something known as ‘lead by rebuttal,” the journalist said.

“This entails first getting ‘reaction’ to the allegations. This reaction can be from anyone at all, ranging from opponents or supporters of the target, but preferably the target himself.

“The media will then run this ‘reaction’ as the ‘news’—and insert the original allegations which have now been commented upon, as the excuse for publicizing the original claims themselves.”

The journalist gave the theoretical example of a journalist asking a public figure “if he ever beat his wife.”

If the public figure answers “no,” then the journalist can run a story saying “public figure denies beating wife”—and then in the story, safely repeat that the allegation was that he beat his wife, even if there was zero proof of this claim.

“This technique places the media’s target—in this case, Trump—in an unenviable situation,” he continued.

“If the target refuses to comment on the allegations, then the controlled media will run headlines reading ‘Trump refuses to comment on Intelligence Document,’ and then proceed to give the details of the allegations upon which Trump would not comment.

“If, however, Trump denies the allegations—which he has—then the controlled media will run the news—as they have—as saying that ‘Trump denies allegations in Intelligence Document,’ and then still proceed to give details of the allegations which Trump has denied,” the journalist said.

“This technique of making a story out of wild, unprovable allegations by simply first leading with a reaction, has been used time and time again by the controlled media, and is a well-known trick in newsrooms around the world.

“In this regard,” the journalist continued, “it is significant to note that the controlled media only use this technique against those they do not like.

“None of the media outlets currently salivating over the bogus ‘Trump intelligence document’ would have asked Hillary Clinton about the numerous anonymous allegations which surfaced about her during the election campaign.

“These allegations varied from the utterly unproven lurid claims about lesbianism, and her supposed connections to the criminal underworld, to claims which did have some element of truth to them, such as the Clinton Foundation’s alleged financial malpractices with regard to Haiti, and generous donations from corrupt Third World dictatorships such as Saudi Arabia.

“However, there has never been a controlled media headline reading ‘Clinton Denies Lesbian Allegations,’ or ‘Clinton Denies Taking Money from Haiti Fund,’ and so on,” the journalist pointed out.

The “Trump Memo” now being widely quoted as the latest “scandal” claims that the “Russian regime” has been “cultivating Trump” for the last five years, Trump has “accepted intelligence” from the Russians, Trump has been blackmailed by Russian Intelligence after being monitored watching “perverted sexual acts” in a Moscow hotel room, and a “dossier” on Hillary Clinton has been created by the Russian secret service—although it has not “been distributed to anyone.”

The document contains no proof whatsoever for any of the allegations. For example, a typical quote from the document reads as follows:

“Speaking to a trusted compatriot in June 2016 sources A and B, a senior Russian Foreign Ministry figure and former top level Russian Intelligence officer still active inside the Kremlin respectively, the Russian authorities had been cultivated and supporting US Republican presidential candidate Donald TRUMP for at least 5 years. Source B asserted that the TRUMP operation was both supported and directed by Russian President Vladimir PUTIN.”

This then, is the level of “proof” of the document, the authorship of which is unknown.

All the controlled news networks, including CNN, ABC, NBC, Reuters, Associated Press, and literally hundreds, if not thousands, of media outlets are now running with the claims using the “lead by rebuttal method,” all safe in the knowledge that they have a plausible defense when the allegations are proven to be fabricated.

The latest “intelligence report” will, invariably, be exposed as another hoax, perpetrated by the establishment coalition of the controlled media, special interest groups, and Washington D.C. insiders—and serves as further proof that the biggest purveyors of fake news are the so-called “mainstream media” outlets themselves.

Fortunately, the Internet provides a tool whereby these lie-stained perverters of truth, and opponents of freedom and justice, can and will be subverted.
