The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) on Friday called for early legislative elections after amending the electoral law to get out of what was described as a “political crisis” after President Kais Saied seized most of the powers in the country four months ago.

Saied seized nearly all power, suspended parliament, and dismissed the government in a move his critics called a “coup” last July.
The official news agency in Tunisia quoted Spokesperson for the UGTT Sami Tahiri, stating: “To get out of the current political crisis requires amending the electoral law and passing to early legislative elections.”
He added: “The next stage will be one of the most difficult trials, not only for the union as a national and social organisation, but for all the actors in the country, in light of the lack of political stability and uncertainty at the economic and financial levels.”
Saied announced on Thursday that he was working on a schedule for reforming the political system to appease growing opposition to his decisions, without giving a specific date.
Tahiri affirmed that the UGTT: “Will not accept a political scene that excludes parties and organisations.”
