Robinson was arrested while on vacation in the Aegean holiday resort of Didim. Also arrested were his Bulgarian girlfriend Mira Rojkan who is living in Leeds, UK, with her mother, who accompanied the couple. The two women were released but police detained Joe Robinson. The UK Foreign Office stated that it was aware of the arrest of all three and the fact that Robinson remains in detention and may face charges. The Foreign Office stated:

“Both the women were subsequently released, but the Turkish authorities have stated that 23-year-old Mr. Robinson, from Accrington in Lancashire, is being investigated in connection with terrorist offences and is likely to face charges. …. We are aware of the detention of a British national and have requested consular access.”

Turkey considers the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the all-female Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) as terrorist organizations allied and on par with Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK). Ironically, the YPG is the main fighting force within the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a fact that has led to a great deal of tensions between NATO partners Turkey and the United States.
